1970 Swinger 340 Hemi Orange 4 speed

Thanks for the comments!

Neat project.

I hate to break this to you, but, that pass side inner isn't right for a 70. It's a 72+ piece. It has the dryer recess in it. Early cars were flat in that area.

Yeah i'm actually in the process of trading them with VA58? he needs them for his 72 Duster build. I'm gonna use AMD ones. I didnt realize that when i was buying them, oh well. atleast somebody else will have a use for them (im just gonna trade left and right even tho the drivers side is the same) since nobody offers them aftermarket

I got my full quarters today! They're perfect with no shipping damage, :D. My rockers, door strikers, outer wheel tubs and trunk extensions are on order next.

Here's a better pic of the rallye dash too.

I picked up some of this evaporust and thought I'd try it out and it's amazing! I threw a rusty door hinge, inside door handle an misc. bolts in a can and its been about 30 minutes and its already coming clean. Ill post up some pics tomorrow of how the parts look... This stuff doesn't attack galvenizing, rubbers, plastics or paint, Just the rust.

I might buy a bunch of this stuff and make a redneck pool out of a tarp and some wood and put the whole body in it and submerge a pump in it with a hose and run it over the entire car. That way it will be spotless inside and out and will be cheaper than sandblasting! It will clean out my frame rails too. Has anyone ever used this stuff?

This is about 30 minutes so far...

I went looking for some of that at Canuc Tire and they were out so I tried a product Enviro Rust on a handful of bolts. Now I forgot them and they sat all night and they came out a black oxide finish so I'm not sure if that's from being in too long but the rust was gone. I want to give that Evapo Rust a try it looks impressive. Thanks for showing us your results.

The evaporust brings the metal back to its original state, it just attacks the rust. it doesn't convert it like some other products do (black finish) its worth trying out! My cousin actually setup a pump and tray and ran it thru his frame rails on one of his darts and it cleaned them spotless. I think I'm gonna go this route on stripping my car (chemically stripping the paint first) and then running this stuff over the entire car.

Yes the sheetmetal is perfectly straight, there are no waves or dents and all the body lines are nice and sharp.

Here's about an hour or so... By tomorrow all the parts should be shiny. The hinge is cast and metal and was pretty rusty looking.

Here's after a night of soaking.. I'm sold on this stuff and I'm gonna use it on the body of the car.

I've got my window tracks and door latch soaking now.

Sure seems to work well, how do you plan on using it on your body? It appears you need to keep it in contact with the rust for an hour or so and a large area seems to be a challenge unless you could dip it. I wonder if you could slop it on heavily with a big brush and cover it with plastic to try and stop evaporation and give time to do its job. Just trying to figure how to do large areas without buying a 45gl drum of the stuff.

If you go to this site (pretty much the same stuff) http://www.safestrustremover.com/before-after.asp# and go to the "full image slideshow" on the left side, it shows pics of guys doing there cars with a tarp and a sump with a spray nozzle. There's one with a corvette frame and they do one spot with this method and it comes out spotless. It has to run constant over the rusted metal (or be submerged) until it's clean. I figure if i do a section a day it will come out spotless. The nice thing about this stuff is it will get in all the pinchweld seams too and my car wont have to leave the garage!

I'll check that out. I'm thinking I might try this on the bottom of my floor pan since that's the only real surface rust I have. I'd like to avoid sending it out to be blasted just to clean the bottom of my floor pan, this could be an option, thanks.

Congrats, this looks like a fun build! No hesitating at all...LOVE IT! Ive used the evap-o-rust its amazing eh?? If Canadian tire is out of it, try Home Hardware, they carry it as well.
PG classics and BE&A are the same company. PG covers Canada and BE&A covers the US. Try to order from PG it will at least probably save you on shipping??
Classic Industries I have read are pretty good as well..

Thanks for the comments guys!

Here's more random sheetmetal pics!

As usual all these AMD panels look top notch!

Oh, how I remember those days, calling Columbia parts Co ( they saved me alot of money) and saying send me everything AMD has for a Duster. There quality is second to none should go together feairly painless, just follow the step by step instructions... seriously though, good luck and keep the weld wire flowing. I'm also finishing up a 70' go mango 340 swinger for my Dad, so I have a soft spot for them now.

Thanks guys!

Ross, i just checked out your build and your car looks amazing so far! I see you replaced the rockers. How well did they fit? haha i cant wait to setup my welder, it looks like you've got the same one as me (miller 140) I'm in the process of setting up my garage right now, and then i will begin tearing into my car. I've gotta finish insulating it, drywalling and adding natural gas heat. i'm not looking forward to drilling the hundreds (possibly thousands) of spot welds out on this car! That Swinger your Dad has is beautiful! Whats the build date of the swinger if you don't mind me asking?

My next AMD order:

-front valence
-rear valence
-full trunk pan
-passenger side inner fender
-lower radiator support
-floor wiring covers
-battery tray
-manual transmission shifter tunnel
-door skins (still on the fence on getting these)

Thanks, Yeah that Evaporust works awesome!! Thanks for the tip.

Actually Mike at BE&A is great to deal with and shipping was not a problem. If i have to pay a couple extra buck in shipping and get awesome customer service, than it's totally worth it IMO, :). I'll continue dealing with Mike over at BE&A since he's super easy to get ahold of, awesome to deal with and helps you out in shipping (Uses USPS which will not gouge you on shipping like FEDEX, UPS Etc..

I actually just got my classic industries catalogue in the mail and they've got a ton of A-body stuff!

Thanks guys!

The Rockers were fairly to replace, they fit real nice like all AMD stuff. The Miller 140 is great for sheet metal work (and Thicker) I use the auto set and go. Make sure you get a Blair spot weld cutter and several extra cuting bits, I used a air drill, since it's slower than electric and spray with WD-40 or equivalent. The Swinger build date is 11-69. Good luck, look forward to seeing the progress.

Thanks guys, my plans with this car is to have the underside just as nice as the top. I will go full tilt with it in the springtime, since I can't really do much when it comes to sandblasting it in the winter time unless I can get a heated enclosed trailer to transport it from the blaster to my house.

Haha yeah I've got an awesome GF who lets me store parts in the house (in the spare room) :D

Yeah it has the perfect options that I wanted! I have been looking for an EV2 swinger for years, to restore and this one has the four speed and factory black interior with the black stripe which is exactly what I wanted! (I didn't want a fully optioned one but I would have settled for any EV2 340 car at the time) if I were able to buy one new back in the day this is exactly what I would have ordered. I'm also picking up some original 340 (14" x 5.5") dog dish rims for it right away. I can't find the build sheet for the car yet, but judging by its low options it most likely came with these rims originally and I just love the way the steel rims look being colour matched. I will also get a set of the original whitewall Firestone wide oval tires for it. I want this car to look 100% correct with the exception of a 408 stroker.

Great build so far, love the old pics! Only heard good things about the AMD stuff, so much is avail now! Sad in a way (but will save many cars from being crushed/parted!)

Don't think 70 Swingers came with dog dish (correct me if I'm wrong fellow FABO members! Also think the 340 Swingers only came with Goodyear Polyglas E70 14s (with are available in repops through Coker Tire, missing some orig lettering if I remember correctly)

I have a couple 340 Swingers as well & a friend just bought a EV2 340 4-speed like yours. We are next door in BC.

Looks like you are going to do a great job, enjoy as I will in seeing your pics & may inspire me to do mine... maybe, lol $$$$$$$$

Thats good to hear, i think the hardest part will be getting the rocker out since it goes behind some panels, but it should be pretty straight forward.. same goes for the outer wheelwells. I got one of those brair spotweld cutters and a bunch of various different diameter cutters (3/8" 5/16" 1/4") I got the 1/4" cutters because i plan on separating the the hood skin. My Dewalt drill has 3 speed settings so hopefully it works (500rpm) i have an air drill but it's just to noisy, especially with the amount of spotwelds i have to cut! So that autoset works pretty good?

Cool, mine it sept 22, 1969. was just checking to see if theres any on here that were built the same day.

I know some did come with dog dishes. my friend had a plum crazy purple one (three speed manual and 340) and the build sheet said it came with steel rims (FC7 paint) with the caps. I believe they are the rims that came standard on all 340 cars, but i could be wrong?? I do love the rallyes too, and might get a set down the road to change it up once in a while. I think the rallyes came with the tires your describing.

Awesome, where abouts in BC? i'm originally from Kelowna and have lived out this way for only 8 years now. I'd love to see some pics of your 70 Swingers! Do you have some pics of the EV2 one?

Thanks, i'm gonna need lots of inspiration along the way too, haha. This will be the most challenging build i've done so far, luckily i'll have my dad to help me along the way.

If it weren't for AMD this car probably wouldn't have been saved (same goes for alot of other mopars) AMD has alot of awesome stuff and it's great they keep coming out with more stuff! they've got rear frame rails out now as well as torsion bar crossmembers for the A-body!

I didn't realize from the pics of your Dart that it needed this many panels, your right thank god for AMD it should turn out nice and solid when your all done installing all of them. Just got my new welder for home but am seriously considering replacing my garage before I get too carried away. Another source for EvapoRust in Edmonton is Busy Bee Tools, they have it in gallons, that's where I went. Maybe this miserable winter is over and we can do a little work on our cars!

Haha yeah i'm making sure i've got everything i need before i tear into it, because i kinda know what to expect.. there's usually alot more sin when the panels start coming off! The rockers are solid until it hits the lead seam where it mates with the quarters and i know the part of the rocker that goes behind the quarter is rotten, so i'm just gonna replace the whole outer rocker that way i can clean/paint the inner and weld the new rocker in and never have to worry about it, plus i'm trying to avoid any patch work on it. The inner rocker appears to be solid on the car which is a bonus. As for the door strikers.. mine look like they've been welded by Stevie wonder around the striker area, so i bought replacements. I plan on keeping this car forever so i don't wanna cut any corners on it and only do this once. AMD should be my sponsor, haha! I'm just lucky all the critical parts of the car are solid. The frame rails and torsion bar crossmember are solid and it has never been in a wreck (aside from the drivers frame rail where bumper mounts in a little torn which will be an easy fix)

Yeah the weather has started to look more like spring these past few days! it's about time. Yeah i'm in the same boat on setting up a garage to work on my car, it's currently snowed in the garage that's not heated, so i have to wait until it's melted away before i can get it out and begin tearing it apart.. i cant wait to start on it! What welder did you get?

Thanks for the info on the evaporust! How much are they selling it for?

I went a little hog wild on my welder but it should last me forever and do everything I need, I got the Thermal Arc 211i, it does mig and tig and stick on both 110v and 220v. I've only had a few minutes try with last weekend, I want to try some of this tig welding, should be interesting.

Sounds like a neat welder, i never knew there were any 3 in 1 welders like that.
