Hello A-Body Gurus. I just picked up a 340 this evening with a vin LH23xxxx. I don't recal Darts having a 340. So would this confirm that it was originally in a 71 Demon or maybe Duster?

From what I've just read, L would be a Dart or Demon so that rules out the Duster. H is High value so I'm guessing it was somewhat equiped. 23 we all know is 2 door hard top. H is the 340 and 1. Is the yeAR 1971. I'm thinking this came from a 71 Demon.

Hold on, Dusters and Demons are 29, LM29H1 for a 71 340 Demon, VM29H1 for a 71 340 Duster I believe. There are rumors of Canadian 71 340 Swingers. Others know more about that than I do. Anyway, if it says LH23H1x------, seems like it would be from a hardtop Dart.

Yes you are correct. LH was a Swinger from 71-74.

I just found an article claiming 75 of the Special 1971 Dart 340 Swinger were built. They were only available three impact colors of purple, orange or green.

Being that you are in New York it it possible that one of the Canadian engines made it down there.

There is a member here who has a registry of the Canadian 340 Swingers, you need to contact him and see if the VIN is in his registry.

I'll definaty try connecting with group that follows the 71 Swinger

Could be a Candian Swinger 340

Demon 340 were LM29H
Duster 340 were VS29H

I don't ever remember seeing a full vin on a block except for 1969
68 was on the bell, 69 had the full vin and 70 up had a partial vin
1970 - 0Bxxxxxx, 1971 - 1Bxxxxxx, exc

Did Canadian cars have full vin stamped in the block?

Full vin was only part of the model year in 1969. They went to partial vin around Jan 1969.

what's next on the block VIN?

LH23...P1R?

R is Canada, right?

I just checked my 69 block and the julian date, build date and it is Sep, 24 68 so early motor for sure, casting date of 9-9-68

Thanks for posting the link Kendred... you can find out everything about these rare little Canadian order '71 and '72 Swinger 340 Specials there!!!

As far as engines and engine stampings go, 1969GTS340, could you PM me the full # that's stamped on the block - would love a pic - to verify if it is one of these. The VIN's are sequential on these cars, all built on the same day so I'll know if the number slides into them. Also, the stampings were the last 8 digits/numerals and would look like this 1R267XXX - on the few existing original engines. But, never say never with Ma Mopar - these engines were '70 and early '71 castings, because they were late season builds.

With my website - www.swinger340specials.ca - I've also built a page that hi-lights the 340 engine thru the years - just an FYI :)-
