With all these responses, only one person pointed out that your '71 360 is a unique engine. As pointed out, it has higher compression pistons. What has not been mentioned is that it shares the same casting with the 340. 340: 4.040" bore. 360: 4.000" bore. That means you can bore that '71 360 out 0.100" and still have the same meat around the cylinders as a 340 bored 0.060' over. With smaller over-bores, core shift really doesn't matter much. Dude, you got a killer "race" block there!
my personal opinion is to stay away from MSD You can upgrade your ignition control box for more RPM and if you brake down it can be easily changed on the side of the road I installed a 650 on my car and it was a big improvement Just took some time to set up Just my personal opinionI just picked up a 1973 Duster 340, with a 1971 360, 904 trans and 8.25 rear. I haven't checked yet, but I think the gears are 3.91's or 4.10's. The engine at some point had a fairly beefy cam installed and I'm not sure about the stall speed on the converter. My question is, the engine has an older Holley 600 cfm carb. It needs a rebuild, but I have a practically brand new Holley 4160 750 vacuum secondary laying around. Will the 750 be too much carb? Should I think about a new 650?
Second question, I have been thinking of upgrading to an MSD billet distributor with a 6AL box and coil. Is the change to a new ignition system, worth the investment?
Just an update, the Holley 750 works perfectly and the car really responded to it. The vacuum is 10 and the power valve was a 6.5 so I installed a 4.5 and everything works great. The only issue I'm chasing is the idle. I set the timing and adjusted the idle mixture screws, but the idle in gear is about 700 rpm and in neutral, it's around 1100-1200 rpm. I'm thinking it's a vacuum leak somewhere.

Do you care to enlighten us on what you would have chosen? I know that popular advice is half of idle vacuum but that's been something of a "horseshoes and hand grenades" setting in my own experience.Not sure why you went to that 4.5 PV.

With that big of an RPM jump going to drive, it may need more initial timing.
1/2 the vacuum on a PV is the standard. Even Holley states that on their videos and tech support. I had a 6.5 PV in it originally and it would bog off the line, now it doesn't. The only issue now is the idle. There is a big difference in the idle between P or N and in drive.

Alright. So I'll take that to mean "The timing is where it is all else be damned and I'm not gonna verify a damn thing" Sounds good to me. Have fun with it.The timing is off the scale, not sure where, but I would guess around 20 degs.
