1971 Dodge Dart Canadian Special 340. LL23H1R263395

-
The engine & transmission are out. I sold the 1973 transmission as I have a dated 1971. Still looking for original drivetrain LL23H1R263395. The 340 is from the West Coast as the VIN on the rail shows a Los Angeles plant build. 1971 Duster 340, 1E136523, automatic transmission.
I have acquired the correct late build intake manifold, valve covers and dated thermoquad. The thermoquad has been rebuilt by Scott Smith @ Harm’s. I also have the aluminum carb spacer. I have a good used valve cover breather, 3 outlets. I have purchased an NOS, correct dated passenger exhaust manifold. The radiator numbers match the build sheet and has been restored by Glen-Ray Radiators.
Next is to lube engine to see if it turns over!

Yesterday I received a message from the body shop that there is space for the 1971 Canadian Special! I was off work at the time so I dropped everything and loaded the car up! You don’t have to ask me twice! I started stripping the large pieces that I didn’t already take off after the car was in the heated shop. Later in the day, I received another text that he made an appointment for two weeks at the sandblaster.

That’s an exciting step! I remember the day the body shop said I could drop my Scamp off, many many days while it was in the shop and also the day it was loaded onto a flat bed for the trip back to my garage for re-assembly.

Engine turns over nice & easy! Took off makeshift engine brackets! Now looking for 318-340 passenger side bracket. If I found several brackets, great as friends are looking also.

Found more correct parts for late 1971 engine. NOS exhaust manifold, used intake and nice 3 nipple breather. NOS front shocks! Chased down a lead yesterday for NOS rear shocks, but wrong part number!

Correct throttle bracket and fast idle solenoid. Just purchased one with numbers as all I could find in 2016 had no numbers! Carb restored by Scott Smith along with aluminum spacer.

I need a drivers door post to go along with my NOS quarter panel but I have the wrong side in stock! Lucky me, I have 4 parts cars!

Car ready for rotisserie in one week! I left the glass, doors, deck lid and dash for body shop to do.

Not sure if I am going to powder coat the housing but going to car wash next. Going to drain rest of the gear oil and see it I can blast the brake lines and save most parts.

Spent hours at body shop taking last items off the car as it sits on the rotisserie. Just waiting for a few days with no rain in the forecast to go to sandblaster. No undercoating on the car and the floors look really nice, now! Let’s see after the blasting.

Dan R said it was the best body of the '71 340 Specials he had seen, back then, so glad the bottom is still good... enjoy :)-

I am looking forward to this thread! I noticed you said you where going to run at the Pure Stock Drags when finished. I had a car there several years ago and what an event! I was wondering who was going to build your engine. Some of the 340 A bodies are really fast! I have a 71 Duster 340 that I have restored but doesn't get driven much. I also have a 72 Duster 340 survivor car that I am going to drive. My farming career has kept me away from the PSDR lately. Good Luck! David

David, you are mixing me up with another 71 owner from page 1 with his FJ6 from Michigan. His name, Casey Marks, built his engine himself. I do not plan to drive both my Special’s as I have 2 original 1970 Dart Swinger 340’s.

I have a feeling this one will get done a lot quicker then your 72 and next year will be it’s 50th birthday and you have to have it finished for that, more pressure Joel!

Body shop called to ask if he can order all supplies except final paint, I said go for it. He says he can get the car to the paint booth in a month! I have all these sub- assemblies to do but trying to get glass in the 72.

OK My bad!

Watching
Keep up the good work
Is there any reason you went with a cross bracing instead of front to back to support the door openings?

Joel:

Do you still have your Lethal 1 '70 340 Swinger?

Lethal 1 is on my TX9 70 340
My original car, my first Dart, is still here! Numbers engine back from machine shop, getting assembled. Then need to go through all mechanicals as it has been off the road since 1986.
