I'm to the point of running the wiring and have a question. 2 wires come off the Distributor. I have a color coded wiring diagram but it doesn't show the red wire. I'm sure one wire goes to the coil but where does the other go. This system is stock.

A 273 original stock Commando would have One wire out Of the dizzy to the Negative terminal of the Coil! Pictures of what what you are doing would go miles in answering your question.

Unless you have 2 wires off your dizzy! Then it fails you.^^^ agree. Unless!

No red wire comes off the distributor. Maybe you mean coil?
This is the Distributor that came on the 273 that I have. 1 red and 1 black
That's an electronic ignition distributor. Not stock. Some.mods have been made. Do you have an ecu?
Looks like a Pertronix. Look online for the instructions.

It will need power.
Otherwise looks like a points distributor, possibly a dual point. Halifaxhops here can help you get it back to factory if you prefer that. Then it will only need the one wire from the coil.
Yeah the housing looks cast(original) but with mods like TMM and Mattax mentioned(pertronix). Been some squawking about Pertronix I've noticed lately. No knowledge/experience on my part.
Well you have a good ignition it seems, a Pertronix upgrade. Easy deal to hook up, red to coil plus and black to coil negative.
A more full pic of the dizzy would help some to determine, but likely as described.
There are some rules to follow with the ballast etc, you may consider searching Pertronix II for more info to aid you in the requirements for good results! Post some better pics as many of use these conversions! Me for sure but I use the Flamethrower III unit.

Looks just like my pertronix. Red to + on coil and black to - on coil. No ballast resistor.
No ballast IF you have a low resistance coil. The 45011 Pertronix coil is .6 ohms. A high resistance coil and no ballast can cause the coil to overheat.
No ecu
Petronix ECU (signal amplifier) is internal - that's why it needs a source of constant power (the red wire) with key in run/start.
Other electronic units have two wires to send a small electrical pulse to an amplifier. Thats why later, non-point factory distributors have two wires.

Yes.
But look at their website and follow what they tell you! It only works great when you follow the rules. Coil and ballast is key! And in my case the correct ignition wires!
