273 valve adjustment

Anybody ever heard of doing a valve adjustment with the motor running. I can't imagine doing this but it's actually in one of my tech books.
Anyone done it?
 
me thinks you must have been reading one of those chevy books !!
 
Definately the quickest method but also pretty messy. Not that bad if you have an extra pair of valve covers with the top cut out you can put on just for adjustments. Personally have done it years ago with my dad but would not consider it now. Bad things can happen when working over a running engine.

Yes I have done it many times, on slant six and poly head motors. I tried it on an LA and decided to shut the engine off. The easy way to find a noisy rocker is to insert a .005" feeler guage while the engine is running. OLD FELLOW TRICK!!
