3 head decks have a tape/source "monitor" button and a strange looking "sandwich" tape head.

These permit true monitoring of the results as you record something live, and permit you to run the recording level as high as possible without overloading the tape.
I understand why you would want one.
Best of luck finding one.

I kind of miss analog tape recording.

Any particular brand/model you're looking for?

I've been seeing some good ones at thrift stores recently (including a 12v portable Nakamichi).

I've bought two (including an identical model to the last one I bought new),

but just cant justify any more when I can go direct to MP3 format.

What I'd really like to find, though is a HQ home single CD player for use at my shop.

They all seem to be changers or DVD.

I LOVE the convenience and portability of my MP3 collection, but navigating a menu and using soft controls can be a pain with so much material to scroll through.

Sometimes it's nice to just thumb through cases and pop one in the player.

A little pricey, but they're still made; CD Players - Newegg.com
I'd suspect most are bought by mobile dj's or radio stations, though they're becoming rare even in those applications.

You do realize that DVD players will also play audio CDs.

Yes, but the controls are not the same.

They even have component audio "media players" for your stereo rack (or DJ rig), but talk about "pricey".

MUCH cheaper to get (or re-purpose) an older PC.....and the menu is better.
