LOL your the second guy now with that...i have always thought that x heads were one of the, if not the best, factory smallblock heads, but that guy tried to tell me otherwise...im just trying to understand the science behind these other heads to see if hes right, half right, or completely wrong

Those are just some 'smog era' 'air port' style heads.
They have the holes in the exhaust floor for air injection, some say air inj bosses provides more floor, but really no significance.
Those heads in that artical made several diff mags, I have it in car craft of like 2002, they max'd out at 253cfm around .550 lift.
I'll dig up the mag.

I have 70 x heads 340, 2.02- kicked butt. Have a set of 70 j's, same head. 2.02 Same performance.
Maybe only on a 340?

My mild bowl blend and push rod pinch open up netted [email protected] & [email protected] w/my x heads.... so it's really who's porting them.
They did an awful lot and got only lil in my opinion.
It's all about whos porting them.

yes i agree with both those points...considering ive never ported anything before and this would be my first time, im wondering if the 308 heads would even net me over what stock x heads flow...and yes, i read the whole article and agree they did quite a bit of work that i expected more numbers out of

Yes they would if ported.
'Stock' 2.02 x heads flow around 199-215cfm depending on the usual variances.

you ever port a set of 302s? theres alot of meat in there. matter-o-fact i broke through the p-rod guides before ever coming
close to the water jackets. brass sleeves and fixed. IMO the swirl chamber is the power maker.

ive never ported anything man lol so im new to all this...i would really like to port a set of heads though as i think it will help understand all this stuff alot better...of course, i need some knowledge before i even pick up a grinder or set of heads

Aah , I see now. I was talking about x heads stock, to other heads, no porting on any.

When it comes to the W2 exhaust port reference- I believe due to 20 something years of the same 340/360 low floor exh port, people tend to call any mopar exhaust with a good raised floor 'w2 style'.jmo
But really...They wouldn't come anywhere close to what a w2 exhaust flows.

I took a look at the numbers that ryan J has in that link you posed for 302's and J heads, and it seems like the J heads have a decent amount more flow...but flow is not everything right? or alteast thats what i read...and man, i wish i knew what you were saying about floor and seat and stuff lol...i think im gonna look for some sort of cylinder head walkthrough video or something, since i need to understand all these terms and such

When you see a head pick up 30-40+cfm every .100.... Thats fast moving in relation to the cam lift rate and such, and is everything, granted the port volume isn't gargantuan in relation to the bore/stroke size.
And also know that the shady 302 #'s are right at the edge ratio wise 242/142, if that lopp sides anymore the rpm hp turns to crap

I remember a Hot Rod magazine article where they built a 400 hp 318 w/ ported 302's. I still have the issue if you want me to send you the article.

It's pretty safe to say numbers are not everything. In fact, numbers are just that. Numbers. PLotting trends and giving some point of reference for output expectations. Plus, this is the internet. It's pretty easy to say a bunch of stuff and there's no way to dispute it scientifically. Even having someone else test something you can't consider the results to be exactly repeatable, and no flow bench can't tell you how they will work on your combo because it doesnt reproduce the actions inside the running engine.

I don't trust numbers unless they add up with the performance. So "stellar" numbers don't sell me on anything. I've seen too many stock-port-headed cars running fast to believe its' just the numbers. And as I said, anyone can say "I got 'x' for flow". Hughes and Indy do it all the time. I can't count how many times I called into question others' results and got beat up for it...lol. So I'd say you're definately in the majority just going by numbers...lol.

I have a flow sheet for a set of W2 econo's from the 80's that were ootb stock that only flowed 214cfm @25 or 226@ 28
they are advertised to flow 260 or so @.500 or something, so yeah people get ripped, and most never know it...
but they spend a long time disappointed with the performance or lack of.

Good thread...old but good.
You can build and tune around a lot of things weather it be Heads, a cam etc...
even make up for lack of hp if you can tune the suspension better than the other guy.
I still wanna see proof of a 318 or 360 w/302 heads making 500+
