Did we ever figure what the piston height was?

Early (67-69 IIRC) 318's were factory rated 9.2:1, as were the late ones (roller LA 86-89 IIRC).

The 70's ones were rated 8.x:1
 
I didnt mesure anything , just disasembled to change all gaskets and put a new cam and lifters , its so clean inside and no signs of any use...i could buy a 360 , but will found it stupid to waste a great brand new engine , even if everybody hates it !!!

But yet a Chevy 302 has a world renowned rep, the 327 has a killer rep.

Punch a 318 out .060 and you have a .....

Funny but true Rumble! Another thing to remember is that you can improve the performance without building for maximum horsepower. As long as you aren't in the F.A.S.T. class, who cares if it isn't the fastest 318 on the planet.

Its not 318 sucks but 360 does has advantages especially for a street car.
Basically a 360 can go 2 steps up in cam and have the same streetability as a 318, and needs about 2 steps less gear for the same performance.

But I feel as long as your willing to gear it then build it. If not build bigger.

Better put this 318 in the recycling bin ahahahah ( oups sorry my 323 cubic inch ) migh be better if i say its not a 318 anymore!
 
I like the idea of a 318 build/ 323, a little compression, a little cam, and some good flowing aluminum heads.
Build the bottom end and spin it to the moon. Its a Good feeling.

Just was commenting on the OP statement how people think 318 sucks. I agree with ya build a 318 like a 340 and its our 327. Ive said both before. I think the problem is we have 3 very capable small blocks but the 360 has the slight advantage, which I pointed out and makes most go in that direction.

Well, sure you do because you just did it again.

Your saying the small block is good except if you use the 318, You should have used the 360 is because it is better. And what you should have went with.

Instead of just supporting the builder of an engine, you inject how you think it is a bad idea and a mistake.

Bigger is routinely better and normally so. However, you care not for;

Possible;
Availability of another engine
Budget
Wants the build a 318 & or just what he has

But I do think people should be aware of some of the pitfalls especially /6 & 273 builds. And if their ok with it Im ok with it.

I still wouldnt mind building a 400 + hp 273.
 
Just read everything I posted and not once did I try to convince the OP to go 360.
 
I like this one, shows you need cam and heads to build torque (low rpm hp). Everyone is always trying to scare people away from decent flowing topend especially if using decent gears and stall or 4 gear no reason not to.
without a good flowing top end, HP results will be minimal on any engine combo, ANY!
