318/340 questions please help!!

Why do you people quote stroganoff340... I have to glance over that crap and he's on ignore...

For the OP. If you must use a 318 block, just put a 4" arm in it and move on. Easiest way to get your power goal with a reasonable, very streetable camshft. You can put a bunch more duration in a 4" stroker engine and not have the ill effects of poor idle/vacuum quality like in a smaller engine.

And stroganoff340's car is still missing 2-3 MPH with his 416 if it's really making 520-530hp and he has NO IDEA what a properly built 360 runs like... 11.70's... you're kidding right... so take anything he says with a grain of salt. 8)

Carry on with the fun.

I thought i was on your ignore list, can't resist huh??...loser...as for my 360 or 416 when you have something that can touch them let me know...

I thing he is saying its because they are a good engine, not because there are more of them than 318's, but I bet there are a lot more 360's than 340's

Finally someone making sense in this thread..

Of coarse theres more 318's out there they put them in everything, but if you look under the hoods of guys running engines for performance you'll find the 318's have been yank in favor of a 340 or 360,is what i was trying to say...get off the computer and get to the track to see what guys are running in the "real" world you'll find 30 340/360's before you come across a 318,and if that 318 is running good numbers you can bet theres more money in it then the 340 360's to achive the same results...

We all know the 340 and 360 can make more power, just because of the cu in difference, AGAIN, we all know..................

I made you a thread to be stupid in, why don't you go there?????

Spill the beans bro, tell us why 318's are "boat anchors"...............

My Duster ran 11.50's, with a Mopar Perf 590/610 roller cam, ported X heads, harland rockers, etc. Shifted it at 7500 with a 3500 stall RPM, with stock steel crank, light duty floating rods, and TRW pistons. Lots of time in that little guy, Hundreds of hours of work on the heads, and the port o sonic.... Don't regret one minute or dollar I out into that 318

Ok..now put that same amount of work and parts into a 360 or 340 you think its going to run better then that 318???..

So heres my question whats the difference between a 318 and a 340? It cant be that much right? Cause there both small blocks and very close to the same look. And heres the other question, Could I take a 318 and make it into a 340? If so how?
thanks

Depends on the years, but basic differences in a factory engine:
340 was designed for high performance use. It has has much better cylinder head castings... 340 heads have larger ports, larger valves, heavier valve springs, better camshaft, better timing chain, similar true compression ratios, better intake(and 4bbl), much better exh manifolding, better ignition (in 71 anyway), larger carbs, better air cleaner, windage tray, full floating pistons, heavier rods, forged crank (until 72ish), larger bores, stronger LH mount.
318 was designed to move cars and trucks. Some have some of the 340 parts to make them stronger like the forged cranks but that's about it.

You asked if you could make a 318 into a 340. Sure. Add the pie tin, the right color paint, a 4bbl carb, and the better exh manifolds or headers and unless someone has a hell of an eye, or gets under the car, no-one can visually tell the two engines apart. There's also many parts better than what came on 340s that can be used to help performance of a 318. Good enough stuff that power wise there will be little difference between the two if they were built identically.

Nah, run a 318 poly:D If a hemi is good a poly must be better;)

And a 318 with a 4 inch crank isnt a 318 any more, just like a 360 with the 4 inch crank is a 408. They can ALL be improved on!

OMG why did you ask that? you got all the PARs in a rumble now lol the answer is simply Yes
