I cast my vote for the stock stroke 318. I have a great running 318 in my duster now. I didn’t put it together, so I don’t know what cam it has in it, but it has late model 318 heads on it currently. It runs out of steam at about 5000 RPM, definitely cam and head related. I’ve been considering keeping this motor and putting it together with better heads and a more performance oriented camshaft. Unfortunately, I have two 360s sitting in my shop that would probably be built before I ever mess with this one again. Any build you do would be a great point of reference for me if I ever decide to do anything with the 318.

stock stroke for this guy, would love to see one built with some higher compression and some good flowing heads. have a few 318's laying around for a future build.

I voted stock stroke. Ideas swirl around in the back of my mind about how to do the numbers matching 318 for my 71 Challenger conv. I want to keep the 340 HP exhaust manifolds, so making a 390 (even though I have a crank) is kinda pointless. Stock stroke with Speedmasters or use a 360 crank with the mains turned down to make a 349 is what I'm leaning towards. This project might just sway me to stock stroke!

As long as we’re spending other people’s money……..
I’m voting for a head swap test on this one too.

A set of bowl blended 1.88 valve 360 heads to match up against the SM’s.

Naaa, I'm just gonna build this one with the speedmasters, dyno it and then put it up for sale. If I'm lucky I'll get my money back for parts used, and maybe 5 bucks a hour labor

I like the stock stroke idea for a 318. If it follows the path you used recently on my 340 it should be a ripper with light pistons and good rings. Really depends an how aggressive you get with the cam and head porting I guess.

I have respect for 318s, basically a 327 equivalent that never got any factory hiperf parts. Hence, no reputation.
Since I personally wouldn't "build" a 318, I'd be more interested in the 390 build.
But since stock stroke seems to be winning, I will certainly tune in to see the results. (To compare to 327 chevies, and 302 Fords, if for no other reason)

If there was an @NC Engine Builder 340 build that could be used as a template for the 318 build (stock stroke, Speedmasters, etc.) it would (maybe?) give insights as to what a 318 gives up to a 340. Just an idea.

I have 318's. I have SM heads. I'll be following this for sure! One of the best projects I've seen here in a while.

Will be pretty similar to your 340, but not decided on camshaft yet, will probably come down to availability ultimately.

Here you go. Build completed a few weeks ago. Dyno said about 460hp but there was minimal tuning and we had to use 1.5 ratio rockers in the name of schedule. So there is likely a bit more potential with proper sized carb and rocker change when I get it installed.

I voted stock stroke and I'll include why. There are SO many strokers out there. Nearly everybody does them. Plus, we have all the 318 haters on here led by their fearless leader AJ. It gets tiresome hearing about how a 318 cannot make any power. It'd be nice to see somebody prove them wrong.

I've been critical of 318s also, but my criticism is based on HP per dollar spent. Not the potential of the platform!

And we might as well have a name for this poor little 'teen, how about "Rodney" as in dangerfield, "no respect"

Not sure what you will be using for pistons, but if you have any pull with KB, it would be nice to get a part number on a new kb167 with a 1mm,1mm, 2mm ring pack.
Perhaps even a 1.95 compression height.
One can wish....

That would be custom. Got a set of icon IC844s on the way, they have a 1/16 1/16 3/16 ring package, better than the 3/64 stuff but not as nice as the metric ones for sure.

Yeah, makes sense you would use forged pistons i was just wishing out loud that KB would update the inexpensive hypereutectic kb167's

I don't think anyone can argue that. Same with the slant 6. But in the end, if the owner is happy, what else matters?
