Just got the crank linished at a machine shop and I have noticed that on the rear main seal they have linished off the knurling that returns any oil back in the engine.
Is knurling required as I would hate to have a leaking rear main.
Thanks

It's not nec,, many makes of engines just have a smooth finish,, and for reverse rotation marine use,, they often just polish that knurl off..

hope it helps

The knurl is used with the rope seal usually. Once you go to a neoprene type then the knurl can sometimes be a problem and cause leakage. If they have removed it completely then I would be checking that your new rear main seal in making correct contact with the reduced crank journal size , otherwise your going to have a leak..

Like everyone else said, it can be a good thing if they didnt take too much off. If your crank still has the knurling and you use a lip seal, you can expect to have a bit of seepage from the rear main seal when the engine is not running.
