Hi All,

First post here, been lurking/reading for the past few years.

I've just completed a cam swap in my 318 and keen to get any insights/roasting by the 318 gods on what I have done, and what other things I should do. The reason I've kept the 318 is availability and costs in Australia, along with the fact the car was delivered with a 318 from factory making it somewhat desirable.

In my Valiant Charger (3200lb) with a 904 and 2.92 rear gear, stock converter, 318 .030 over, measured 8.1 to 1 compression, stock cam, LD4B manifold, Holley 600 Vac Secondaries and a set of 1 1/2 primary headers into a dual 2 1/4 exhaust I ran a 16.2 quarter mile at 87mph.

With a low budget approach, the combo is now:

318 .030 over
Lunati 10200703
675 heads shaved .100 with 1.84 intake and 1.55 exhaust valves, flowing 210cfm at .500 lift (52cc combustion chambers)
measured 9.7 to 1 compression
LD4B port matched
1 5/8 primary headers
2.5 inch dual exhaust with x pipe
904 refreshed with shift kit
4.1 rear gear

I have two carb options in the garage, the Holley 600 Vac Secondaries or a Carter Competition Series AFB 4760s (750cfm) which do you think I should go for?

I'll also throwing the car on a chassis dyno before getting a converter done, any predictions on how much power I might expect to make?

My goal was to run a 12 with the car for as cheap as possible - with a converter does this sound achievable?

Welcome to the party! I would put the Holley on first, and get the Carter ready if you feel it needs more carby. Sound like a good build, but 318's usually don't like too much carb...

Welcome! Fun project! are you sure you cut the heads .100 thousand?? Anyways, I think with some tuning and patience you have a good chance at reaching your goal. Best of Luck!

Thank you - can't wait to get to the tuning part instead of the mental bench racing part... your videos have definitely been part of the learning curve :)

Definitely cut down .100 thou and measured out at 52cc chambers - cost me MUCH less than pistons would have with the exchange rate, was really the only cheap option for compression available to me.

With the mods, I would run the 750 Carter. I am in Sydney [ North shore ] & can help with jetting if needed.

Hi, where in Sydney are you?

As for the carb you could try both but since you have a stock converter I would lean towards the 600 Holley. I would also send it to Greg Kuchel @ Carby Tuning Techniques to go through and mod/set up for best operation.

Have you put the Charger on the scales at WSID? My AP5 weights 3400lbs with a full tank of fuel so I doubt the VK is 3200Lbs

If you are interested I have 3200 stall converter.

Hysteric! My 410 VJ Charger came in @ 3050 lbs at WSID but that was with back seat and passenger seat removed, fiberglass race seat, bumpers removed, console removed and no tailpipes!
Last time out it ran 11.4 @ 119mph with a 1.63 sixty foot time.
Yes I run a set of 26 inch high slicks with caltracs and 5 speed manual and 3.91 diff ratio!
It made 391 RWHP when it did those times but now with trick flow heads and a slightly bigger roller cam makes 425 RWHP!
Yes I am in Sydney, Camden Park.

Hysteric - I'm in Berowra in Sydney, where abouts are you?

I've had it on the scales and it was actually 3300lb with me in it and I'm around the 200lb mark most of the time lol

I'll get it up and running and reach out to Greg at some point - still need to run the cam in and then finish up the exhaust. Might take both carbs to him and see where we land... not adverse to a different carb altogether but trying to get that 12s mark with a small budget!

I've PMd you re: the converter :)

Sounds like a fun ride! When it's ready to hit the track we should get the Sydney crew out to share in the disappointment/excitement haha

Exactly. Mines a cast iron headed smallblock with a 904 and 8 3/4.

Nice!

Mine ran a 12.6 @ 107 but it had major issues with 3.73 gears and MT 255's

You far away are you with it? Keep us posted and if you need any help let us know.

Running the cam in this weekend, and then finish off the exhaust, install the converter and whatever tuning needs to be done - so not too far away hopefully!

I'll definitely keep you all posted, and will likely have a million questions!
