what is the differance between the 318 and the 318 r3 blocks? i just had a 318 given to me and have been running numbers on it and it comes up with and r3 in the discription also found out it had 360 heads added to it at some point in time. casting number on the block is 4104230-318-7. also what does the 7 mean, im thinking year 1977

7 means the block was casted in a mold that has been modified 7 times...

the X block shares the same casting number as the 318 block....needs to have a big X located near the dip stick is on the front passenger side of the block

According to Galen Govier's books, casting 4104230-318 is a "Race Engine" block, cast sometime in the 70's. Could it be an old NASCAR block? Could be a cool find.

That is also the casting # for a std. car 318 block made from 1980-83

Mopar made things confusing when they re-used numbers.

As Tony said the 7 means that was the 7th revision of the block. Look on the other side of the block and you'll find the casting date.

Another of my favorites from those books. Technically the number is correct, but, the description is not in all cases. So you can be easily hosed if you aren't careful.
