318 Wont idle

-
sounds like a vacuum line is open or hoses are mixed up. what exact carb is it? if you have the exact model you can get the .pdf from edelbrock's site that shows you the spots to hook the hoses. also what weiand intake are you using, and which cam part number? just curious

Squirting just a mist of starting fluid at it when its about to die brings it back to life.

The timing light flashes, albeit erratically, right up until the engine dies.

If my slow brain is putting together what your getting at, i need to take another look at the carb....yes?....

Exactly,
Now you know for sure it's a lack of fuel problem in the idle circuit.
Could be a vacuum leak, or the carb.

Try put oil on the wick in under rotor on dizzy. Your weight advance inside the dizzy seems to not be moving. Take dizzy apart and change green weight spring over to a lighter spring such as a red one. You stated car has no power when driven. It is the advance in dizzy not coming in on time. You will find this true if you put the dizzy on Sun machine and have it tested. I have had this problem before. Have a happy day, D Hunt

It was the carb. Thanks for all the help, very much appreciated, thank you! Wound up borrowing a 750 of a friends big block brand x and it fired right up into a slow idle and runs like it should, considering it is too much carb for it.

Just for kicks try one that worked for me.
Disconnect the vacumn advance hose
and plug it off. Only takes a second and
doesn't cost anything.
