I use my powder equivalent. Though this breather is a few years older than yours, you get the idea. Here's a close up.

I just suffed the chrome slightly with an Emery Pad and sprayed on the finish with about 3 coats, starting very lightly at first. It dries with a Wrinkle Finish - It's been in place for a few years, and has been removed quite a bit, and shows none the worse for wear. --
