340 cam for 318

-
I think with a 318 I would:

do a 340 crank rods and some sort of zero deck or positive deck piston with X or J heads.

However isn't there something where you cant open that 2.02 valve up too much or it scrapes the 318 bore?

Other than that zero deck pistons with aftermarket closed chamber heads. I would get into blueprinting by having the deck resurfaced to obtain zero deck etc.

But what's the cost? I dunno...I think the cams on these engines well, the LA engine generally likes under .500 lift from what I recall.

I may be wrong (Im sure I am) just what I recall etc.

I guess the first order of business will be to send my cam out and have them basically provide a card for it.
Run it past you folks and make a decision from there.

As I mentioned before, all I recall was “like an RV grind” which is a subjective at best.

If you’ll go halves;). That’s not going to be in the budget. I’ll have the shop take the block to 9.58 and square, been reading through the head porting thread, pretty similar to SBC heads, a few more things to remove, but easy enough and is basically no cost.
I wont take it as far as to where I thing the fella took it though.

If you already got an RV type cam probably not gonna gain much with another, unless your not happy with that cam?

Well I don’t know what it is and if there’s a better choice available.
It’s not big $$ to have it checked out, heck, it might be fine.

Yeah that comment was sort of a "If i had the time and inclination" based off what I know about the 318 and 340, that would be what I'd attack to try and get close to what the 340 is. main thing to me is compression and heads to be able to get it to "rev to 6000 RPM all day long" that comment was was the advertisement on the 69 and 70 340 Swinger LOL!
but yes when you really get into it it gets expensive with 318s this is why guys will always say "get a 360" you have the bore for the big valves and the heads etc. a 318 is ok if you have realistic expectations, its a fun V8 to run.

Give me a well running and responsive engine is my expectations. My days of high winding etc, are long gone.

He's only said it about a million times :)
Dan will just ask 2 million times. No longer asking for himself, since guys were tortured by the pretend builds and pretend cars Dan was asking about.
Now Dan is asking for a friend.............

buy that degreeing kit and check it yourself. best case? it's great for what you want to do. not so best case you were going to replace it anyway but now you've got a degree kit for when you install your new cam.

you probably have the components on hand to do this.

why are you having the block decked? i lost the plot on that two threads and several hundred posts ago.

Not decked, squared and to 9.58. Right now I’m .095-.105 down.

I'm thinking that you need to change your user name from 340six to mr.negative. It's obvious that you're against anyone trying to find things out and to get a idea of what they want to do with their car ahead of time. I know that I'm not perfect and I make mistakes and I know that but at least I own up to it which is more than can be said about others on here. Name calling and making fun of others isn't nothing other than a sign of immaturity, sure sometimes things will be said in a joking manner but with you and others I say not.

I might add, in the first thread I came to realize why I wanted to do, wasn’t a decent approach. I made mention of asking for advice and am following it.
