i have a 68 dodge dart and i am looking to get a 318 and bore it 20 over to get as close as posible to a 340 i was just wondering for someone more expircence with cars if that is a good match to put out the best for the dodge
thank u

.020 isn't really gonna ge you that close to a 340. what do ya want from the car? you want something close to a 340 so i assume its performance. if its performance then just build a 360 and be done with it..

are the rims on the yellow dart amarican racing?
i want it for my firs car i am 13 and trying to lean more about this
thank u

young gun, you can get plenty of power out of a 318 to have some fun. if your wanting to build even more power do a 360 instead of a 340. you will find most guys here are more than willing to help out

they are mustang knock offs i got at american muscle.com. take some work to get them to fit a stock suspension car but can be done. do a search there is a thread on it here.

but why a 360 over the 340 it seems like the 340 is much better and more powerful. 360 come out of trucks i have just heard tat it is not very good.
thank u

hey man, also a young gun, for starters 360s are more plentyful than 340s and I have one in my Dakota that with not a whole lot of modifications makes 400FWHP

back in the day a 340 was better. the 360 was considered a smog motor. now they make everything for a 360. a 360 can be picked up a lot cheaper then a 340 so your a head of the game from the beginning. if you can find a 340 cheap then your good. but even then i would flip it and use the profits to build your 360.

This x1000000!!

If you are rebuilding it anyways, a 360 will give you the most bang for the $$$. The 340 to ME is not worth what people want for them. Cubic inches or cubic dollars...

20 extra cubes and a lower buy in price makes it a no brainer for me.

There are some 360's out there running real good numbers.

340 engines are rare and expensive, they are great engines if you can afford one
360 engines are plentiful and inexpensive, and can easily be built to make more power than a stock 340
318 engines are almost free and can also be built to make stock 340 power levels, but they can not be bored out to 340 displacement, here are some cool things to read

Hi guys. I am the old guy in this jordan&carl team. Ran an Olds 442 in late 70s on the street and strip. Had a Friday/Sat nite Main St cruiser(71 Duster with 340) in OH and a 76 Power Wagon with 360 when I lived in CO. But I took out the 360 2 barrel and built a stock 318 with 4 barrel adding power and even better gas mileage.

In CO, I worked at an underground coal mine and also had an auto repair business on the side. Not much sleep for about 18 years until I got this corporate job. LOL Just been out of the loop sorta for a few years.

Jordan asked about a 360 and I can understand your thoughts of engine and parts availability.

Two things come to mind as questions.
1. Would a 318 be as good a choice over the 360 as a mild buildup for street driving? Are the parts and engines as available as the 360?
2. Our Dart has a 225 with small auto trans. When we go to a V8 what is your recommendations for a trany upgrade? Not sure what type of tranny is in it now.

Thanks for the help

it should have a 904 auto trans, nothing wrong with them but you will need to get one with a V8 bolt pattern as the slant six trans will not bolt up to a 318 or 360
318 is fine for a street car but a LOT of people prefer the added displacement of the 360 so be prepared to hear a LOT of differing opinions
