Say, I have a chance to buy a 340, and the last numbers are (.......930-340-6). Any help telling me what year the engine was made, and what kind of horsepower I can expect from it. I was told that it runs well and has about 10,000 miles on rebuild. I have a 72 Duster, 340, 4 speed, posi and air. At this time it has a full race 383 instead of the 340.

.....there is #s along the oil pan rail on the passenger side.........also close to the motor mount u can find the day/month/year it was made.....there is also #s on the front of the block below the drivers head.....kim..........

The engine is 40 years old and has been rebuilt. None of us have even the foggiest idea what kind of power it is making.

We can, with the numbers mentioned by oldkimmer, tell you what it was when it left the factory.

The 383 and 340 are similar in idea. big bore, short stroke.

3.31 X 4.04 = 340

3.38 X 4.25 = 383

IF there built both the same, as close as possible, same compression, cam, style intake used, head work, etc....
The 383 will act the same except make a lot more power and torque over the 340.

(Useless info, lol;
If you could destroke the 383 crank to 3.31, it would be a 375
Up stroke the 3.31 to 3.38 for the 340, it would be only a 346.)
