Anybody ever put 340 rods in a 318 or 273??? Just asking..

............Sorta kinda, Chrysler did in 1971 up when they started putting HD rods in the 318 truck engines for the 1972 model year....I know a couple guys that went the other way putting light duty rods into 340s...kim......

So far as I can tell, from my rod collection and tear down inspections, from 1964 to 1972,I have only seen two types of OEM sbm rods, and two types of little-end treatments.
The little skinny 273/early318 rods, and the more robust 360/340/late318 rods, which Ive seen both unbushed(360s), bushed(340s), and both in 318s.In my collection, the skinny ones IIRC are all floating.
There may be others. This is just all I have seen.
I took a set of the more robust, unbushed 318 rods and stuck them in my 360, after having them bushed. These rods had the same casting numbers on them that the 340 rods had.
Personally,I wouldnt put those skinny ones in anything other than a 273, or perhaps a lo-po 318 with light-weight pistons. They appear pretty marginal to me.Just my opinion.

Yeah and MP also reproduced the lighter 273/early 318 rods with good bolts for years. They used to be available in the Direct Connection/MP Book for a long time. They are somewhat sought after now for a budget light weight rotating assembly.

we used the light rods in the 360 at 7200 rpm after shot peening and cryogenic freezing with out problems in restricted classes.
