340 torque converter is recommended a lot here to a lot of people. Does anyone make these "off the shelf" ? And yes, off the shelf should be available since it's a replacement part. Not one that "will work" in it's place, or "should be about the same"... but one that functions like the original because it's designed to be the replacement. I shouldn't have to call PTC or Dynamics or Coan to get a replacement for a factory converter.

No. You won't find a new one. You MIGHT get lucky and find one remanufactured. I'd try Precision of New Hampton first. They are a Dacco reman converter outlet, so they might can get you one.

I cant get original parts from the original manufacturer for a 2019 let alone a 50 year old engine. Brave new world out there.

Aftermarket replacement is kind of what I was thinking... But a direct replacement. kinda like buying a water pump or fuel pump

Ya, I get it. We are in a sad state concerning manufacturing. I have no help and even less help by complaining. I bought one from Coan.
 
It's been several years ago, but I bought a replacement torque converter for a warmed over 360 that I was putting in a 71 Challenger with a 727/Gear Vendors OD. My transmission guy told me to go to a certain auto parts store that sold Daaco Remanned converters. Just the heck of it, I asked him if he could get me a Hemi J converter. He thumbed thru his book (yeah, he was an old guy!) and said he could get it! He told me it had like 2800 stall, was that going to work? I told him to get it, and it ended up being the best converter I ever had in a street car. It bolted in with the right B&M flex plate for a 360 and worked slicker'n snot!

another vote for Dacco .... I might have to do some investigating. Thanks. Actually, Precision at New Hampton isn't really all that far from me... about 3 hours

As have I. The transmission shop where I ran the office for a couple or so years used them almost exclusively. They make good products.
 
Looks like the hemi converter with dacco is an 11” and part number is 5410, it will have the 7/16” bolts. Wonder what the price is.
TCI breakaway is also an 11” converter and should flash 24-2600 rpm. Is that about like a 340 converter?

I've ran the TCI breakaway a time or two. You're right, it's in that range. It's an "ok" converter, but I'm not a huge TCI fan.
 
Get a 3500 stall converter and don't let anyone talk you different. If you want performance like an original 340 car . Remember an engines torque will also determine the stall also. If it stalls less then 3000 it will be a pig from a dead stop. A stock 340 will stall at about 3000-3200 with a 3500. All factory 340 cars I owned would brake stall between 2800-3200.

Most all the plow trucks came with a low stall 2200-2600 . I don't believe your building a plow truck.
