chemeleon is it true that the holleys run better sideways?

Well, I've never ran them inline so I'm not sure if they would run better or worse.
The bottom is a little softer and I have to give it some revs taking off from a stop. It does pull hard on the big end.

I'm gettin' ready to try a tunnel ram myself, for now its a BUDGET build, nothing razzle - dazzle or hi-tech, Its going on a stockish 383, I'd really like to run 2-500 edelbrocks (no offence-I hate holleys).. What would be the best cam and converter choise to try??? rear is a 3.73 locker, figure I'll run tall slicks at the track to gear it down a little.. Car is a 66-valiant straight axle gasser, front whees will be moved forward 8 inches...it should be pretty light.. Any ideas on cam and converter stall???

i tried a few cams with my set up,im currently running a single pattern on a 112 lsa.i ran a dual pattern on a 108 before that, and if power were my primary goal id have kept it.mines a street car though.and the grind im running now has very good manners lol.by the way i have 2 vintage 500 carters if your interested.recently gone thru.i took them off because the accel. pump quit working on one,and im a holley man...no offence.pm me if your interested.

Anyone know if the street tunnel ram top will fit the TR-5 base?

I ran an STR-12 (Edel Street Tunnel Ram) with a single Demon 650 and it worked fine. Even with the massive plenum, throttle was snappy and it pulled until the 6500 limiter kicked in. MP 284/.484 cam. it came on at 3500, but even the low end was enough from a 340 in a 3000 lb 3.91 reared '65 A.

Running the Holley's sideways has one or two benifits depending on your bowl configuration. Center pivot bowls were designed for road racing and are affected more by acceleration. They are also longer so clearance is an issue. Secondaries on both designs can starve the jets under hard acceleration without jet extensions unless they are turned sideways. Side pivot bowls are superior performers in straight line use.
In either configurtion bowl vent baffles and or vent tube extensions are needed to be sure no spillover boggs you down.

Now about the single carb rant and TR nay sayers:

There is such a thing as a single 4 bbl tunnel ram. I ran one on a big block Demon with a Thermoquad that my wife drove to work daily. She was challeged often but never beaten. The tunnel ram setups typically gain 1/2 second on most warmed up engines if CFM is appropriate.I have both Offy and Weiand. The setup I like alot is two 6425 650 two barrels on a 2-4 top. They are converted to side pivot bowls and provide better fuel distribution than a dominator on a single plane. Something again not considered by the armchair tunnel ram experts. :)
The larger plenum cloud at shutdown will condense and will require more frequent oil changes.

Running a tunnel ram on the street for anything other than looks is a waste of time.

With that said.... Welcome! Nice to have you here!

Back to your post..... If you want the look, we do have people here running them. Give them time to reply and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you want to run one for power.... You will be better off with a conventional single 4 bbl set up.

Are you serious man? Distribution is better(when tuned properly)and were even factory options in the "good ol dayzzzzz................

The post you quoted is almost 7 years old. Not sure you'll get much response.

Another thread for the Monty Python "bring out your dead" video... :)

I always find it interesting how everyone assumes two carbs of say 450cfm on a tunnel ram , is the same as running a 900 cfm carb on a single 4bbl on a sb. It's Waaaay to much carb for that motor.

I believe two 450cfm carbs on tunnel ram would be equal to about 780cfm of acctual flow due to less of a vacuum signal under the carbs.

Some may argue this point and I'm terrible at explaining it but maybe someone else can ...
