Hey guys, Bought a 72 Swinger out off the Yucca Valley a few years ago one elderly owner rust free 318 car, Pulled running gear prepping car for paint rite now. I have two motors and looking for advice and opinions about which one to use... a 1970 340 from a Cuda, X heads, Chrysler Purple cam, RPM intake, 750 Demon carb breathing through Dougs headers. The other option is a mid 70's 360 bored 30 over with Edelbrock RPM heads, Edelbrock Pro Flow fuel injection, Comp cam, with Dougs headers??? What do you think? what kind off Hp should these produce?
Thanks guys.

Well, for starters, these sound like used motors, so which one has the least abuse? The 360 would likely be the best, but what is the cam? The EFI is nice, but can you or know someone who can tune it? The efi would require an high pressure pump and supporting fuel lines so add that cost. Were the heads ported on either engine? The 340 would rev higher, I'd find out what Purple cam. Are either headers for an A body? What is the asking price between the two?

Put the 360 in it and I'll take that worthless 340 off your hands. LOL!
Anyway, the 360 might be a better street setup. Any idea about the compression in either engine? Either engine is capable of 375-400 hp depending on tune, cam specs, compression

340 with a 4speed & 3:23 or higher (short stroke = high revving) 360 with an auto and highway gears (long stroke = more torque) my 2cents

upon further contemplation I believe the only sane thing to do is buy a second a-body

Either will do.

They'll both rev, but one was designed for it with a 2.50 main journal steel crank and floating pins, while the other is cast with pressed pins and was the 'cubic replacement' for the 340.

But what I'm getting at is, to a certain point, they both do the same.

The 340 has been sitting in my shop for a while, I listened to it running before it was pulled sounded real healthy has a mild cam, internally stock as far as i know, Motor was freshened up awhile back heads look real clean dont think they have been ported, Guy pulled #s matching drive train to replace with Hemi go figure. Headers are for an A body. Dart is now a 4 speed setup 8 3/4 4.10's with sure lock.
The 360 is in a 84 Ramcharger 4x4, motor was proffesinaly built by Nixon trucking 2000 miles ago this guy spent all kinds off money having this thing built all parts are new not sure on the cam specs claims it was dynoed at 415 rear wheel horse, The truck runs perfectley he drove it to work for a few months and got bored with it now i have the opurtunity to buy it for a couple grand recipts alone for motor are at $8000 some guys have too much money.

id go the 360 if i was you.
Plus it sounds like that combo your buying is proven!

I find people get too excited over 340's.
I dont find them superior over 360's whatsover.
If your planning on going the whole way with a motor,
heads, stroking, pistons etc i think its better if you start
off with a 360 anyhow. There cheaper too.

A 340, I think, is superior in the way that it is made tougher. But then again, the only SB I have had scatter parts all over is 340's.
Bigger bore breaths better, if yoru into that.
Same with 440's........

But thats just my opinion.

I agree 360's are great engines with loads of potential,.... but 340's are just plain COOL!

I agree 340s are very cool but i am kind off tempted to use the 360 the throttle response with the fuel injection is impressive there are alot more electronics that acompany this kit but when all is said and done i belive it may be a little more eficient and reliable with less tuning. Having said that 340s are still the most desirable sb mopar out there and they scream.
