I didn't realize there were numbers on the upper deck area, probably a byproduct of my ignorance and poor eyesight!

I'll post a separate thread now that there's no mystery to this block.
one question though, aren't the pan rail numbers and the upper deck numbers supposed to be the same?

Nope

The pan rail is the vin for the car it's out of, 1exxxxxx 1= 1971 E = Los Angeles

The front of block is year, plant, size, fuel assembly date and days unit number

G = 1971
W = Windsor plant
340
P premium fuel
3381 = Oct 30, 1970 Build date
0351 = 351st built that day
