I have both motors both are complete the LA motor is unassembled and the magnum is a complete 73,000 mile motor still in good running condition. I'm looking for 400hp. Is one any better than the other to start with? Seems to me the magnum motor would be the way to go. suggestions?

I would rebuild a complete motor as long as it turns over easy any day over one that is tore down, 90% of un-assembled motors are tore down for a reason.

Thanks for the post!

Obviously, I vote Magnum. With 73K on the clock, you should be able to get to your hp goal without touching anything on the shortblock.

Mine makes 320-330 rwhp on the dyno, which is well over 400 at the crank, and there's room for improvement.

Mag all the way, if I recall there are good things about LA blocks but you can get more out of a magnum.
