For the 3k budget builder to buy and build an engine, which engine moves a '73 Satellite the quickest through the 1/4 mile ???
  • Running 383 2bbls can be bought for 500 or less
  • Running 360 are about priced equally - maybe 100 cheaper on average
Buying everything at fair market value, 2nd hand or new... seems the big block stuff is a tad pricier.

I'd go with the 360 and do the stroker kit on it. Then you're at ~408 cu in.

IMHO - the 383 won't make enough extra HP to carry the extra weight and inferior weight distribution of the 383. The car will handle a lot better with the 360. If you were going to pay the big block weight penalty might look for a 400, 440...

I have not quite that in my 400. So I vote my 400.

383, no brainer.

After the aluminum treatment to the 383, it’ll be stock LA weight or so.

Go to 440source.com, start picking parts.
Used Intakes are good and reasonable in cost.

The only draw to go big block for me is if you are trying to exceed 550 horses, the block is a stronger platform and the extra head bolts are also a big plus.

I second that, so I'm not going to play in this game. lol

383 all the way.

A 0.60" overbore 383 is 395 13 cid shy add a turned down 440 crank for 438.

Ported out stocker heads 10:1 235-245 cam.

I don't understand why the B/RB platform, other than body fit, is not an advantageous platform out of the box. Wider bore spacing implies more room for valves, and the ports should be simply better I could be wrong about all of this.

Even if I had to stick to the stock displacement of my 400, a set of TF heads would go on top and a healthy cam would activate the rockers. Let’er rip potato chip!

383 vs 360...no contest.
360 superior in every way!

how you figure that, depends on how you judge them I could see maybe evenly matched, 360 only real advantage is physical size and weight to me those aren’t all that important, 383 has bore size and lots of heads to take advantage of that and displacement.
