I am building a 383 for my dutser, it has a cast crank and is externally balanced. I want a quality damper i was going to use a fluidamdr but they only make a internal balance model. also will i need a specialy balanced flex plate to run a 2500 internal balanced stall converter. I had to get one for my 360 but dont know if its required for my 383. any input would be gret thanks.

383 cast crank ? That seems odd. I thought all 383's were forged cranks. Sounds like this is a 383 with a 400 crank in it ? Or maybe its a 400 ? If you have the old balancer you could reuse it by having it rebuilt. Take a look in hemmings there are outfits that do this. The other thing to check is the parts houses, somebody probably is producing the correct part in a performance version. A 360 flex plate and or damper wont work, the snout is too long, not to mention the balance wont be right. If the motor is apart why not get a forged crank and do it "right" , with a neutral balance damper and flex plate. Make sure to have the whole mess balanced in any event.

they started using cast cranks after 71 i thought they were all forged too. i was not thinking of using my 360 parts on the 383 just wanted to know if i needed a specialy ballanced flex plate I.E. did the torque converter have a balance weight on it. all this came about when they were trying to balace it. need to get them the parts so they can balance it

not that it's any help but i've got a cast crank 383 too and was wondering the same thing. also is there a flywheel for a manual transmission for this motor?

I'd call or check mancini racings web site or store, they should be able to find out for you what's available. Hope this helps.

The 383 cast crank IS INTERNALLY balanced even though it is cast ,same as the 318 cast crank IS INTERNALLY balanced. U do not need any counter weighted balancer or flex plate or fly wheel. If your crank is indeed a 383 cast it is outta a 1971 383, G code for 71....as A=65,b=66 c=67,d=68,e=69 f=70.U can tell by the parting line wide flat approx 1/2 in wide=forged....narrow like a jagged1/6=cast.Hopes this help u guys out. If I can be of anymore help to u , just PM me or by e-mail.....Thanks........Kim

If your crank is indeed cast, the part number is 3462922 and balancer part number is 3577180. Behind the distributor there is 2 inch square area of the block that will be stamped G 383 if it is a 71 383. These engines were a low performance 383, sometimes with a 2bbl carb, before they were replaced by the 400 late the same year. If you are going to soup this puppy up I would recommend forged crank, correct dampener and since there are probably thousands of these things about they can be gotten for cheap.
