383B Stroker Build

554 Rear Wheel HP with a 451 stroker and 906 heads.

I knew I wasn't too far off :) That's easily over 600fwhp...with fewer cubes than what he plans. Now I just have to save up some pennies and send my junk 915 heads to him for some work :)

Yeah true, but that was with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads. Testing 906 heads for the Mopar Muscle Magazine/Amsoil Engine Challenge two years later the 451/906 combination made 694 HP with 9.5:1 compression.

The 383 has a small bore & the Victor heads have oversized valves. Not sure but that may be an issue. Also the Victor heads require offset rockers which are in the $800-$1000 range. Myself I'd look into the standard port Indy EZ. Any max wedge head will severely limit intake choices. Indy might be the only one at that point. That's another $400. Standard port Indy's that are cnc ported can support over 700hp. Better to spend the money on a nice roller setup in my opinion.

If I wanted a standard port i'd go with the performer RPm ported by laroy. 345cfm. I can tell you after many hours of research that no one, and I called probaly over 10 porters is getting these numbers. However for header fitment and a higher window of opportunity i'd go RP heads.

I'm betting if you hooked up with IQ52, he'd probably be able to help you make some choices that would yield a 600hp B wedge with some scrupulous parts selection...apart from your intentions, I guess your budget is the overall limiting factor.

I been in contact with him and he's awaiting my rpm heads for a full port job that will go on my 440rb. 600hp would be a dissapointment to me in the 496 build. My greatest limiting facotr at this point is my ability and extrememly limited time.

EDIT: just noticed you mentioned likely use of a 496 kit...that shouldn't have much issue making over 600 with well prepped heads...pretty sure he's accomplished that same number with as many cubes using ported 906 heads.

Several times the issue of an itake has been brought up. Edelborck makes a victor max wedge. Check outt he numbers on that intake. Indy intakes, at least their dual plane has/have issues.

I could be wrong but I think you may have missed on both points. 1st the small bore of the 383 (4.280") may interfere with larger 2.20 intake valve that's used on the Victor head. A 400 block would be a much better choice for this head, imo.

Second, I do not believe edelbrock makes a low deck "max wedge" intake. They do make a 440 one.

Oh, and most guys that have low deck motors generally would recommend a standard port. You can support well over 700-750hp and don't limit yourself on intake options. But hey it's not my cash.....

I had to check on this myself adn the intake selection does in fact seem to be an issue.

Indy makes 2 OTS intakes that would work. 400-2 - 4150 base
400-3 - 4500 base

Can a standard port intake be ported to the max wedge window?

I suppose going with a prepped set of standard port heads would work. Just not sure on header fitment.

I've seen the a couple intake pics & it looks a little dicey on getting a good seal. End up with some thin lines on the the gasket surface if that makes sense. I had a new set of the Victor's on the shelf for my 451. Ended up selling them & getting a good deal on ported RPM's. My standard Comp roller rockers fit, cheap torker intake I got for $60, etc. Spent the extra dough I saved on a roller cam setup.

At the point in time where I replied, I guess I missed your intended power output. But, even still, I was only trying to demonstrate that with your intended RPM heads, and Jim's handiwork, your 496 should easily make your desired outcome since he's been known to make even more with iron heads.

In any case, I'm betting if you post up details of your build, we'll all happily watch :)

Not that I'd want them or want 2 carbs BUT The ram intakes should work on a low deck with raised ports. Just something
I thought of.

legend has it that a holley street dominator intake can be opened up on a low deck motor with max wedge heads to almost the port size (width = ok, height = almost) and they work fairly well. the even fit under the stock hood.

if you go with the Indy hardware, it will put the carb top flush with the hood or thereabouts. plan on a scoop.

third option is custom and you are talkin $$$ but it can be done. there are custom intake houses that will make one for you, it will be 1 of a kind
