4 speed bracket on hump

What's the purpose??

That is on every 4-speed car to keep the bench seat from going all the way up and hitting the shifter, even on bucket seat cars...
 
I actually agreed with Poster #2
NOT because I knew that,
cuz I have never seen that bracket before, not since 1970,
but because I thought it was a joke and I found it funny as heck!, lol.

IMO, the factory shifter location was too always too far forward in every 4-speed car I ever owned. I guess now I know why, lol.

In my hot rod, I used a long-tail trans and put the shifter a good 7 inches back, and up tight to the bucket, for a nice relaxing, back in the bucket, power shift; and no more throwing my shoulder into it and risking a knuckle buster, if I slip off the ball. Since I did that, nearly two decades ago, I have never missed a shift, and never slipped off the ball..
