408 or gen 3 hemi

At that power level you should be shopping for a good mopar engine builder that will help come up with a combo/plan for you.

Boring and its an ugly engine and they look like crap in an old cars engine bay
Appearances are subjective; I'm not offended if anyone thinks mine is ugly.

Lots of suggestions here and I'm not going to read all of them, at least not yet. For those leaning towards the HEMI watch out for those valve seats in the heads, THEY FALL OUT from heat. At least the LA stroker doesn't have to worry about that unless you are running alloy heads. Beyond that, the same tech that is stock on a new HEMI can be implemented on any earlier design and then it comes down to the materials used in the later models, all of it, right down to the serpentine belt drive. Well, reverse flow cooling is a bit tougher to deal with but not a big issue. I don't care for forged power rods and fractured caps with cap bolts. Same goes for those building 7.3 l Ford diesels and later model Cummins', the older parts are better. The rods in any LA are far better than what comes in a HEMI in my opinion. I had a whole bunch of other stuff I want to say but it come out too much. I deleted it.

The valve seat isue seems to be limited to the early 5.7stuff,-09 and newer dont seem to have that isue, stock eagle/SRT/6.4 heads willl kick pretty much ANY Stock style LA/Mag heads *** so hard its not even funny, yeah i know some people might be able to get close porting some stock style smallblock castings but still thats just to get close to what the stock gen3 already does from the factory.
The gen3 heads are serious stuff with their straight raised ports there is just no way around that part.

As for the rods, who still uses stock rods in a new LA build that is anywhere near serious? rebuilding stock rods will cost more than getting a set of new rods that are also lighter.

Not arguing for the sake of arguing, some like their smallblocks and some like a HEMI we all have our preferences and we should build whatever fits our desire thats why we do this stuff!

Valve seat issues where with early head. Most people adding power will rework heads anyhow, especially to get the all the power out of that block. I have an 04 5.7. And have had no issue and it gets drivin and pretty hard too.

I was going to post a response to this but if I do, it would be a small book. My point is I have done this for nearly 50 years and I've seen and done stuff that so many will never see or do. I'm not just some guy that comes around here for entertainment. I've done professional port work, engine work, transmission work, differentials, transfer cases, passenger car to heavy road and industrial, for more people than I can name, worked around and with people that are or were the ones that set the bar or everyone else, that have made it around the world in competition, sponsored competition stuff from pullers to rounders, drag, commercial transportation, industrial machinery, ag. It sounds like I am bragging to most but the truth is if they actually knew the truth, well it wouldn't be bragging, just stating history. My name only means something to those that knew or know me. I was always in the background not in the camera or at the parties after it was over. Fact is there are so many people like me no one ever knows, only those that pay the bills.

Our ears are open to your sharing of some of this knowledge. We aren’t to old or to young to learn.

stroker gen 3 if BB is out. mighty tall task for a 408 to the ground power.

Ever notice how hard it is to get compound curves in aluminum? Works great if you fold it once but trying to get it to fit over the fender inners is a PIA. Then there is the firewall.

Feel free to enlighten us on the advantage(s) the smallblock have.

Preference is one thing,advantage another.
