I have a friend who's building a 440 out of a truck, to go in a Chrysler 300.
...and he's asking about what caused this. I assume detonation??? Would anything else cause this?

Thanks... he said the damage is not very deep. It was out of a mid '60's Dodge pickup, somebody's project, so don't know any history. All 8 pistons were like this. May never know.
looks like pre-ignition or detonation marks to me, typical clean area in the pattern.
