Makes you sick? $6,500 is probably the cheapest you would have to pay for a respectable engine around here.

Yeah, just going off of what the others have posted here, $6,500 seems on the higher end of what a reasonable price would be.

x2. There's all kinds of levels of capability in shops. Price pretty much always reflects potential. A 3-4K complete rebuild I would expect to be startlingly average with a lot of parts re-used and nothing really performance related, on old equipment maybe by someone with moderate drive and ability.
Not a "high performance" result.
