440 Source Head Opinions?

that is on a mild build too.

that seems pretty good. I'd also wonder if these were some pristine example 906 heads that came out of Dulcich's stash or something too. I know they do recycle alot of parts and builds to keep the content rolling out consistently...

It's been a while since I watched the episode but I want to say they were a pair of heads Dulcich had in his stash that he did a light amount of work on. Like light bowl/casting flash cleanup, decent valve job etc.
 
So if they were 516 would that not bump the compression up ?
Plus did the 440 source have a decent valve job ?
Not really the best comparison.
 
Stock combustion chamber on 516 heads is 84ccs. 915s are about 79ccs and Stealths are around 80cc

I think the Stealths were just untouched OOTB. My local race engine builder/machinist (Atlas Performance in Loveland, CO) has messed with those heads before, he said with a GOOD valve job (factory one kinda sucks) and valve heads back-cut it'll pick up 20+ cfm in the lower lift ranges especially just off the seat. Just what I need for a torquey truck engine that'll see towing duty with a very mild cam that only has ~.430" lift.

So in a nutshell regarding the Engine Masters test... factory iron heads were ported and flowed more than stock, Stealths were untouched but could've benefited from a valve job, and the Trick Flows were a tad too big for the engine to make good use of. IMO that explains the lower-than-expected HP increases for each head type.

They weren't ported, magnafluxed, they did have some minor valve work done, and four new valves. That's why the price was $350. I can get the specifics so you can scrutinize further,

I'd do a set of iron heads if they were that cheap. Think I'll call my local machine shop and see what they say for rates.

Guess I'm jumping in too quickly lol, I was just going off what @1968rt said.

I'd do them if they were that cheap too, have a pair of 346 castings but they're original high-mileage pieces so they need basically everything... valve seats, guides, likely new valves, springs, retainers, locks, cleanup deck mill. And I'd still have open-chamber iron heads that flow significantly less than the ported Edelbrocks on my SBM 360, fer cryin' out loud lol.
 
Rebuilt Non-906/452 Heads from Aerohead start at $499.
That’s with bronze guides, SS valves, and HP springs.
906/452’s are $200 more.

But if you add hardened exhaust seats, 2.14/1.81 valves, and the bowls ported and gasket matched...... you’re at $1137($1337 for 906/452).

Pretty easy to get up into the Stealth price range.

I had arrowheads on my 413 before the stealth swap, the stealth heads are so much better imo.

i wasn’t pointing to anyone in particular, just saying that I hear good things about Todd Marsh and his sidewinder heads for Big Blocks. The price is comparable to 440Source and he’ll custom build them with whatever you want. In hindsight, I wish I’d gone with those vs my Edelbrock RPMs.

12.40s is good enough for me, cheaper to run less stuff potentially breaking.
 
Stealth heads with the seats recut and a nice bowl blend with flow right about [email protected] lift.

Most home ported stock heads(especially 906’s and 915’s) I’ve tested are typically in the 250 and less range.

The [email protected] is a little more than these flowed:

On my bench an ootb TF240 flows right about 316/[email protected], and 320/[email protected] lift.
I’ve tested about a dozen of them, they’ve all been within a few cfm.
Exactly what I got with my TF, OOTB was 318, cleaned up the CNC ribs, removed practically all the turbulance and went up to 324. Great heads
