Hi I have a 1969 440 freshly rebuilt no tranny
I’d like to run the engine with no trans I have a starter adapter plate and a flex plate on the engine
can I buy a flex plate with the ring gear built in to start the engine if so what size ring gear ?
any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank Tim

You need something with a ring gear like a torque converter for your flex plate or something more easy, a flywheel.
Or one of those cranks like on the front of a model T and someone like the Incredible Hulk to turn it over.

No. You'll need either a manual transmission flywheel, a converter or the front half of a converter.

That would be interesting watching a converter winging around on the back of an engine @ 2000 rpm... unsupported.
There was someone on here who has just done it. It didn't wobble at all. That was my concern as well. He said the flex plate held it just fine.

I've always wondered if you could put the first cylinder just a little past tdc, spray some ether in the spark plug hole, screw the plug back in, and use a Chevy hei module with a hand operated trigger to hit the first spark, and get it going that way...

I remember seeing a video on boobtube with someone using a TC. I was surprised but seemed to be OK...for that video anyway lol.
