I think it's time to replace my long gone 1911 with another one
(went to a gun show on sunday, that did it) my old one was a 1914 civilian model that had been re blued and was not all original, functional but not very collectable, so I am looking for a low budget replacement, older is better, pre series 70, functional but not collectable, just a good shooter grade piece, no modern copy's, real colt or government contract piece like a REMINGTON RAND, or arsenal rebuild, what do you think is the cheapest I can expect to find something like this? $250, $350, $450, more? just trying to get an idea of what a good deal might be so when I see one I can grab it, thanks

About 6 years ago I purchased a Springfield Armory V-10 Ultra Compact. It has a double stack magazine and comes from the factory with all the bells and whistles; ie: beaver tail safety, fluted barrel, custom trigger, etc...

Mine shoots low due to the stock sights being replaced with night glow sites. The rear sight is too short, compared to the original sights, so it shoots way too low. One of these days I'll find some stock sites for it. I bought mine used so I could save some money.

The cheapest you are going to find and still get a quality piece are going to be Taurus. Colt, Remington, Springfield are all going to demand top dollar, regardless of age. If you want a fair priced great shooter and top notch customer service, the Taurus PT-1911 is the way to go. Here's 2500+ to choose from -- all manufacturers.

And stay away from Rock Island and Umarex -- they are cheap and you get what you pay for.

You may want to look at Ruger and Springfield. Springfield offers a bare bones GI model new in the box for about 550. Ruger offers a smoother model for about the same price.

I know it's blasphemous but up here in Canada we have access to CHINESE 1911 copies!

Yes I know I know. But for $300 for a brand new one it at least works. So far after 3000 rounds it's gone shot for shot as accurate as any other "name brand" 1911 I own.

I had the same Model Springfield. It fired extremely low as well with the factory sights. I think it has more to do with the porting than it does the sights. David

Not impressed with Taurus at all for various reasons and yes, I own one. Rock Island makes a good 1911, and yes, I own one of those too, lol. The Rock Island had the best trigger pull out of the box than any pistol I've ever owned and was 100% reliable with ball ammo, not so much with "Flyiing Ashtray" 230 gr. hollow points. A trip to the gunsmith cured that for 125 bucks and it is now one the most accurate, reliable, fun shooting pistols I've ever owned.

I have not shot one of the new Rugers, but I sure wish they were availible when I got my Rock Island. Rugers are made right here in the USA and they are typically overbuilt.

As a previous 1911 owner, you probably already know that most all of them that can be had for under a grand (and even some over a grand) could use feed ramp polishing. On the other hand, they are very easy to customize. I have a Wilson G10 grips, extended safety and Novak adjustable tritium 3 dot sights on mine and it's really a joy to shoot.

Nothing wrong with a Norinco 1911. They used to be all over down here too - in fact I have a NIB one I bought years ago. Many custom 1911 builders used Norincos for the platform - because of the metalurgy, of all things.

To answer the original post - to find a decent older Colt or Springfield you will be on the upside of your price range - by a lot for a Colt. About the cheapest New, "brand name" 1911 these days is going to be at least $500+. There are a few off brands like Rock River and such but I would stay away from them.
Since your 1911 has already been reblued, why not have it rebuilt?

I carried a Springfield 1911 Custom when I was on SWAT but now carry my Sig Sauer P220 for daily duty use. If you could find a lower cost scale Springfield that'd be the way I'd go. The one I had was maintenance heavy in terms of having to spend time keeping it clean, but the thing was a tack driver and never failed me.

I own a Taurus stainless steel 1911 and I love it! Over 2000 rounds down range - no issues - and accurate. You are not going to find one with the options the Taurus has in that price range.

I have a Springfield 1911 commander 4 1/4 in barrel shots perfect love that gun perfect balance

Road, do you remember what you paid for your Taurus?

$600 out the door.

To be honest, I just wanted a 1911 and was not expecting a match-grade piece from the Taurus. I ended up being pleasantly surprised - so much in fact, I bought a Blue Taurus Raging Bull .44 Mag with 6.5" barrel. Now THAT'S a fun revolver.... :D

Does the Taurus 1911 have that goofy *** Taurus double stike trigger on it? Years ago I a a PT24/7 (9mm) that had it, strangest damn thing.....

Nope. No double strike trigger on the 1911's.

Here's mine

I knew a .45 thread would get some good responses!!!
I have checked out some of the online web sites, but looking at pictures on a computer screen just isn't any fun, I need to see it in person, searching gun shows or a good gun shop, the small mom and pop stores where you can deal with the owner not just some salesman on commission, now THAT is my idea of FUN!
and new guns? yea I guess they are nice... but BORING! new guns are like new cars, or new guitars, no history, no character, as always I am searching for that diamond in the rough
:coffee2:

I still say Taurus is your best bang for the buck. I love my SA, but it wasn't $500...

There is a PT1911 for sale locally for 500obo I am seriously considering picking up. I just need to pull 500 bucks out my ***...
