5 or 6 bolt Oil Pump, Help ASAP!

Im in the middle of changing the oil pump in my 73 dart (225) The new pump that I had on the shelf is a 5 bolt and the one on the dart is a 6 bolt. Comparring the 2 pumps the 6th bolt looks like it is only there for the extra big "gusset". Other than that the 2 pumps are the same and seeing as how I have a new in the box 5 bolt oil pump and the parts stores all have a 1-2 day wait for a pump that will cost me $110 or more (why the hell is a stock slant oil pump that damn much anyways friggin bastards) is there any reason that I shouldn't just go ahead with the 5 bolt. I have the right side of the motor jacked up, the filter off and 2 of the bolts out. 4 more bolts and I can have this thing done in 20 mins other wise I have to chanse it with a old pump that is slowly going out and I have to drive it to work tomorow.
 
Use it dude. The 6th bolt was added in an attempt to slow down the oil leaks around the pump. Hope this helps.

I figured it was something like that, god forbid that they use a better gasket and maby some sealer instead of making things more of a P.I.T.A. kinda like the left hand lug threads. Wouldn't want your wheels flying off on the freeway or anything. I already made a new gasket after looking ath the thin peice of crap that came with the pump.

Actually the early OEM pumps were 6 bolt, and the aftermarket pumps are 5 bolt.

Just a FYI. the factory pumps had a 5/8 inch thick rotor, where the replacement pumps, have a 7/8 thick rotor. So the replacement pumps are a high volumm replacement. If you get a high volumm pump (which is not needed or really wanted), the rotors are either 1 inch or 1 1/8 (I forget which).
 
High volume or not it was all I had and it is in along with a new sending unit and a thicker gasket with gasket sealer. I don't like leaks and the extra trouble of scraping gaskets off later is worth it. Took it for a drive came back pressure washed the driveway, washed the dart and there are no leaks and the dummy lite isn't comming on anymore. :cheers: Not really what I wanted to do on a nice day but it beats hearing a kachunk, whang, knock, knock, knock, boom on the freeway.
 
360, The pump you used was fine. I was just pointing out the differences. Being as the "stock" aftermarket replacement pumps have a higher volume, then the factory pumps, it is not necessary nor desireable to use the aftermarket "high volume" pumps. They put too much extra load on the cam and pump gears, and have a comparativly high gear failure rate.

PS, I use the stock replacement pumps (like the one you used) on my engines (not high volume), with full groove mains, and even the turbo, with no problems, and I spin my 170 engine about 7,000 rpm.

If you get one make sure that it isn't frozen. They are showing up on ebay so if you want one ask the seller to make sure that it spins and that there isn't any rust on or in it because there isn't any coating and your lucky if there is a cilica (or whatever that stuff is) pack in the box. I got one for a buck because it was frozen from rust. They have all been sitting on the shelf for years and years.
 
They might be finding some more in the warehouses...I just got one shipped to me from NY. Supposedly the last one they had .:???: I just knew they were gonna be out of them when I found out about this last week.
