509-557 cam in 318??

Has anybody run one of these purple shafts in a 318.

What convertor did you run (stall speed )

I am really wanting to run a 4800 to 5000 converter.(9 1/2 dynamic)--with a big duration cam.

Thanks for any feed back.............

what heads/intake and exhaust are you running. that is a huge cam and stall for a 318. if its a stock bottom end its gonna really disappoint you. need more info on your combo.

with that lift on a set of stock heads your going to have coil bind or valve to piston clearance issues. unless of coarse you have build the engine around your intended cam choice.

I installed a 509 years ago in a 318 for a customer. It was in an 87 W150 4X4 with 38s on it. I redid the top end and he wanted it recammed too and he picked out the cam himself. I did nothing to improve compression. It had headers an aluminum intake and a Holley 600. Everything else was STOCK, converter included. LOL I must admit, it turned out better than I figured it would. It sure sounded nasty.

Using one of those cams in a 318 with what you're intending, I wouldn't cut any corners on anything.....and that means it ain't gonna be real street friendly. Lotsa compression, lotsa head, lotsa converter and gear and lotsa money to keep it fed.

I ran something a little smaller than the 557 in a "teen", foggy memory says .525I, .550E lift, 245*@.050I, 250*@.050, 106LDA, converter was supposed to stall at 4800rpm behind a 360 so it probably stalled less than that, 5.13 gears. That cam went flat so I replaced it with a Comp XTQ281S-6, same converter, switch to 4.88 gears, car went 12.54@108 mph. Chipped it at 7400, shifted at 7000.

and lotsa high rpm fun if its done right!

i am running .528 solid purple shaft on a stock rings and bearings 318 with Edelbrock heads, it drives sweet, can cruise all day in summer and it has enough vacuum to run power brakes and pulls hard to nearly 7000 with a 600 afb type carb. Over winter I have bolted on a 750 annular carb but havent had it out the shed yet to try it.
