I am very new to cars and recently purchased a 1971 plymouth scamp with a "c" engine all stock. My problem is the car starts fine but then if i press on the accelerator the car turns off, i tried moving it and it turned on when i hit the accelerator it stalled. Any suggestions? please let me know if you need more details or anything else that you need to know thank you for helping :D

accelerator pump....fuel filter, choke not working, all of the above? rebild carb

i took my carb out and it was clean inside and out looks like the previous owner had just given it a good clean it was missing some gaskets which i have ordered but i put the carb back and car wont even start anymore it cranks but doesnt turn on

rut roh raggy. Sounds like you may have other issues with the carb. If the P.O. was willing to put it back together without gaskets, who knows what else could be missing or adjusted wrong.

Check out the carb post on .org. Very good info on the various /6 carbs with diagrams and settings.

Remember that if the carb was drained of fuel it'll need a couple of good cranking sessions to fill it back up.

What did the accelerator pump cup look like? was it hard as a rock?

i dont recall if it was i will post some pics up to make sure i installed everything right

If you get it started again you could try slowing pulling the accelerator by hand but if that works you definitely have a bad accelerator pump

You could use some starting fluid just to get the thing to fire and run just long enough to fill the carb.

I got the car to start it idled normally for about 20 seconds then it started idling very rough I would push the accelerator and the car would not respond it did that for maybe ten seconds and it died smells a lot like gas all around the car and exhaust on floor were small black dots that appears to be oil or some other gunk coming ffrom the exhaust

Black stuff like that is usually caused by an over rich mixture. Not always but most of the time. Sounds like the float level may be too high and extra gas is getting dumped into the venturi. Had that problem when I rebuilt my Holley. (1920 model?) Had to set it a lot lower than the rebuild sheet called for. Hope this helps and good luck! Mike

that looks like a reman carb to me.half the time they are crap right out of the box.it sounds like you have a sticking needle valve,or a high float level.

thx for the advice I should be getting my rebuild kit tommorow and it is a holley 1920 will lower the float tommorow with the kit thanks once again

Sucess!!!!! after i got my kit she fired up nicely 2nd crank was idling high though and there was a little bit of smoke coming out through the intake manifold i believe right under carb also when i turn the car off i let it idle for maybe 5 mins a little bit of smoke started coming up and water started leaking from the radiator top where its suppose just in case the car heats up? well anyone have any ideas for me to do next lol i got her to start and idle smooth but now its overheating =/

If your car sat for a long time. I would have it power flushed (cooling) maybe flow tested. The cooling system is one of the most neglected system on a car.

Be careful when you get a flush done sometimes build up in the rad and heater core will keep leaks from leaking just like in galvanized steel plumbing once its flushed it starts to leak again if you have to replace the rad do like I did and spend the extra 20$ and get the max cool rad its a little bigger but bolts up the same. I would also check your timing if it's advanced too far it will overheat had that on the last one I bought bad tuning got me it for 300$ Also poor compression on a cylinder will overheat the motor but if it runs smooth I wouldn't worry about it being that

if you take the termustat out and get some liqid dish washing detergent put the hole bottle in rad. start car on fast idel for about 30min.slow idel down shut off let set over night dran and do the same thing only run car out on road for aday or more and it will look like new.its always worked for me.then dran take top hose off flush tell you see clear water dran and put new thermast in anti freez or what ever good to go. sum of thos fluss have an acid in them and is prety harsh on parts. just traying to help p.s I hope spelling dosent count.

I would think that getting the soap out may be tuff. How would you keep it from suddsing up? What do you hope to flush out with this solution? It sounds like a bad idea to me.
