Hello everyone, after browsing around endlessly as a gues on here i decided to create an account and ask some questions i have.

Going to be swapping out my slant 6 in my 72 scamp for a 5.9 magnum. Im hoping to get an engine in the next couple weeks and start gathering everything needed for my swap.

So i plan on running a carborated v belt system. I know mostly everything i need to get for the swap (thanks to FABO)

My biggest question right now is exhaust manifolds. Im doing this on a budget so TTI and dougs headers are off the table for now. I looked into the summit G9040 headers but not sure i want to take on that headache. So i read a few posts regarding using magnum manifolds. Can somebody explain which magnum manifolds i would need to look for for both Passenger and drivers side. And yes i am planning on keeping my power steering

Will my slant 6 power steering pump work on the 5.9?

Thanks in advance!!!

I’m using a 68-71 340 drivers manifold and passenger 2 1/8 magnum
No clearance problems whatsoever
Slant p/s pump working
There’s a magnum manifold in a body thread here

Im thinkin if i can figure out what years and vehicle manifolds work i could grab at the junkyard and clean up. I looked into the 340 manifolds but they were all crazy expensive

1993 Dakota driver's side exhaust manifold and 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee passenger side exhaust manifold. These are the ones with the larger exhaust ports. Part numbers 53006619 and 53009376.
1965 Valiant 200

Wil that driver side fit with p/s in the 72?
I Know they will not fit on early A-body. Not sure about 72. I think I read about someone trying it by using a custom made power steering line with a 90 degree bend in it to clear the manifold but not sure if they ever succeeded or even tried it. You may have to research that part of it a bit more.

Yeah i was reading up on the magnum manifolds post over in the exhaust section and everything i gathered its a no go lol. I may just go with the header route and deal with running the centerlink through the pipes. Itll be a headache but for the price of 340/360 manifolds id be spending more on them then i would the G9040s through summit. Plus it should make my header back system alittle easier to install. Maybe im wrong who knows lol. Live and learn i suppose lol

Now regarding the power steering pump. Can i use my /6 bracket or do i need to switch to the small block bracket. I assume alternator bracket is different from slant to sb?

Being over 60 now and can’t remember s..t I went to check to see if I had the slant pump after my conversion yes
How ever I got a full pump/bracket and pump from a 360 which I put on the magnum So I can’t really tell you if the slant pump will work. I can tell you that I had to have a custom hose for the pump as it was too close to the Schumacher motor mount kit and thus providing little belt adjustment.
The other issue I ran into was the oil pan. The magnum pan won’t work in ur situation so what you need is a la pan
There is a gap at the front left of the pan I “made” a sandwich gasket from gasket material and epoxy. If you are unsure you could have the lip welded and grind smooth to fit your app. The trickiest thing will getting the converter/flex plate/balancer tight Be sure to have the correct flex plate balancer and torque converter or you will have balance problems. If I remember correctly the balance situation up to 96 was different than 97 on. I used the factory flex plate a neutral balance converter and a professional products balancer. You will probably find that there will be some washers involved to get the alt etc. aligned. Also if you want to keep a mechanical fuel pump you will need an la timing cover and fuel pump “boss” to put on the cam . Considering what others hav had to do in other transplants it was a piece of cake!
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I knew about the pan and flex plate. Do you know which harmonic balancer i need with the vbelt. Can i swap pulleys on factory 5.9 balancer or do i need a balancer from an LA

Mopar performance sells a great balancer through summit pricey
Don’t remember about the pulley/situation
I don’t think an la balancer will work in this situation

I believe i watched a video before and the guy said early magnum engine had 2 piece balancer and pulleys that work with the LA pulley ill have to go back and watch again. Probably should start writing all this stuff down lol

That's correct and what we did with out 65 Valiant.

Do you know which years to look for for that balancer?

Oh man, not specifically, but it's the first few years. Not sure when they changed them to the one piece unit. That said, do think you can get a new aftermarket one that has a set of bolt on weights to accommodate the mag for around $100 from summit. Actually there are a few some less. Not experience with them but I know when my son rebuilds his, he'll get something better.

Here, is a short thread from when I asked the same question. This post in that thread shows a unit that was from 99 and has the 2 piece. My sons was supposedly from a 98 and had a one piece, which calls the year into question. I've never taken the time to verify the date if the engine.

thanks for the tips. ill do alittle research on the years as well as the aftermarket options. trying to do a budget build so saving money anywhere i can

Slant 6 bracket is different than LA, but the pump can interchange. The pressure relief valve is different between a V8 and /6 pump, but the /6 pump is actually better anyway (less pressure = better feel).

Just in case, you can use the 4 piece LA gasket with the LA pan and not have the issue of the gap in the front corners. You lose the one piece gasket with crush sleeves, but if you are concerned with filling in those gaps it solves the issue.

thanks for the tips. time to start gathering parts now. will 318 p.s bracket work? or does it have to be 360?

318, 340 and 360 are the same.

Not sure about years, the earlier motors used a timing chain cover that used a passenger side timing mark and different water pump, so I would bet the PS and Alt brackets are different.

okay thanks theres a chrysler cordoba in a pick n pull near me with a complete engine so i can grab everything i need right from that car, just wanted to be clear 318 parts will work
