Okay...I'm not a car girl...like'm but don't know much. (Had a 57 chevy in high school that I had to learn how to change the points on cuz it always left me stuck somewhere! but that's about it)

Son's Dart left him stuck last night. I think....selanoid? I know I can use a flat blade screw driver to test the selanoid...but, ummmm where do I put this screw driver? LOL...so I guess I need the location of the selanoid and maybe general discription of what it looks like. I'm not afraid to try things...so hit me quick before I have to have it towed home?

Thanks..

Becky....a novice classic car owner!

It is integral to the starter, and yes you can start the car with a screwdriver.

If it is a slant six, if it is a v8 you may have trouble getting to the started.
Make sure you are not in gear when you do this :)

Okay....but what exactly do a touch with that screwdriver??? LOL....and yes it's the slant 6 and I'll double check the gear and parking brake!

OK, open this link, the first post then the first picture in the first post is a picture of a starter solenoid. I believe yours will look similar this picture is of a 1972 though.

What you want to do is take a pair of pliars or a big screwdriver, MAKE SURE it's in park or neutral and set the brake!!!!!! You want to jump across the big nut on the left to the other terminal that has the slotted screw head on it. "Both of those wires connected to the two terminals you jump across" will be a bigger wire diameter than the other wire connections on the solenoid. It will spark so don't get to worried but you should hear the starter engage.

Thanks for the help! When I got to the car, with my trusty screw driver, and started tracing thing back from the battery, I noticed a wire with a rubber "Thingy" that plugged into a box in the fire wall looked loose. One push poppies into place and WA-LA! Car started! ;). My son thinks I'm a genius! Don't tell him any different!

I sure appreciate all the input that came so quickly! Great resources here.
