There were 2819 Dart 270 hardtops equipped with a V8. Out of them, 591 cars had the 273x4. The rest had the 273x2.(2228 cars). There were built 164 cars with 273x2 and 271 cars with 273x4 with 4-speed manual transmission. For the three on the tree V8 cars there were built 83 cars (273x2) and 33 cars (273x4).
Hope this helps.

This car has dual exhausts, and does not have the cut out rear valance that I have seen with other 273s. -- Is it possible that this is one of 271, or just a copy ?

what's the fender tag say?

do you have a build sheet to corroborate the information?

none of the early cars came with duals from the factory, and there's no cut out on the valence so that may be your first set of clues. however, a lot can change in 60 years...

This is the fender tag -- Do not have the build sheet.

AB31= V8 4bbl
D3= 4spd
E5= heater & defrost
Q1= AM radio
V3= back up lights

L= dart v8
3= high
2= 2 dr HT

H= high grade trim, bench
1= cloth + vinyl
B= blue

DD1= dodge, light blue metallic (?)
D= upper door paint blue

to add: just because you have a fender tag, doesn't mean that it's from that car.

the SO number should be stamped on the radiator support and match the tag. that would indicate the tag belongs to the car.

the early cars don't have motor/trans that are numerically tied to the VIN, so the best you can do is decode the numbers on the block and trans to see if they're correct within range of the build date.

so between those: fender tag matches what the car purports to be, parts in the car match the tag, and parts are of the correct time frame for the build; one could reasonably say it's legit.

or somebody went to a helluva lotta trouble to get there.

but if i was spending big dumb money on a "one of car" i'd want a build sheet or some other kind of documentation to back up the provenance.

31 engine code is a HP 273-4. The dual.exhaust was added. They cane with the HP single. The rear valance was probably damaged and replaced.
It has a 8-3/4" rear -- was that available in a 65 ? -- Also, S B P wheels.
