Hey boys,
My fuel gage is dead most likely taken out by a crappy voltage regulator. Where do I start with this? sending unit? gage cluster? I would like to save the stock gage even though I have some AutoMeter stuff.

I believe a damaged voltage regulator should also affect the temp guage, they both use the low voltage output. You may have also lost to ground bracket on the sending unit. There is also a connector behind the drivers side cardboard cover between the dash board and the floor.

Hmmmm. I just went out and checked out what you suggested. I found a little thing that looks like a small relay or something. Is that what I'm missing???? I'll bet it is. It just fell down to the floor after sticking my hand up there.

I bet it is, if you google it( I can't remember what the heck it's called). My 64 doesn't have one that can just come out the back like that. There are articles about going to radio shack and building a newer set up for the 64's. I'm not sure when the went to the newer style that plug in the back of the cluster. It's about a 1 1/2 long and a 1/2 in wide.

If the gas and and possibly the temp gauges are inop, the instrument voltage regulator which regulates voltage (5 volts) to the gas and temp gauges is most likely the culprit. In the 65 Dart it is a combination unit combined with the gas gauge and once the gauge is fried, it's gotta be replaced. I've got several loose ones as well as a complete operational instrument cluster from my 99,000 mile GT convert (I have a NOS instrument cluster/bezel going back in when I get to that point). If you want one of my loose fuel gauges (no guarantees on working since I don't know the history on them) you're welcome to one. PM me your address and I'll send you one.

If the fuel and temp gauges are inop, the most likely cause is the instrument cluster voltage regulator. If only the fuel gauge is inop, there could be one of 3 things wrong. Unhook the sender wire at the tank and short it to ground. If the gauge pegs you need a new sender. If the gauge still doesn't move, check the strap across the length of rubber hose that connects the sender with the main fuel line. If it is missing or rusted in two, replace it and check the gauge again by shorting the sender wire to ground. If the gauge still doesn't work it is bad. Hope this helps.
