On the rear moldings that go up along the rear quarters there are 8 clips that hold the trim down. So tonight I put mine on but was unable to adjust to fit so I removed them and found that the clips are adjustable and the bolt part of them should slide back and forth to fit trim on correctly. Each clip has a rubber gasket and of course since mine are over 50 years old they were hard as a rock and pasted to the clip not allowing bolts to slide in the clip. Here are the pics of what Im trying to explain the first pic is the actual clip with the hard rubber washer pulled part way up

here you can see that the bolt has a slide built into it with bolt slide all the way back and the one beside it rusted in place

In this pic you an see the bolt moved to the front position. This allows you to move the trim to fit the quarter.

The washer is to keep the water from entering the quarter.
My question is what have others done. Does anyone sell a rubber washer that would work. I plan on visiting my local Ace tomorrow maybe NAPA, or another option would be to make some washers from an inner tube or something like that.
What have others done to refurbish they clips?

If it helps, I've made many parts out of old inner tubes. I got a cheap-o set of hole punches from Harbor Freight which I use to make these custom-made gaskets. Works like a charm...

I bead blast part if in usable condition. Make sure stud is not stripped and slides/adjusts. Repaint near original color to repel rust. I use the strip/caulk which is cheap and easy.

Owned my 66 for years but I haven't had to remove the chrome. Dang those GT's have a lot of pieces.

Well after taking off all the old washers from the clips I freed the bolts in the slide. I then soaked them in oil over night. My first stop tonight on my way home was at Lowes and unbelievably that had the perfect rubber washer. They came in packs of 2 and they had enough packs to do the entire job! I sprayed the clips good with cleaner and then installed the new rubber washers.

Once the washers were on I installed them into the trim and installed the trim back onto the car. The rubber washers were .99 a pack. Cheap fix. I also ran a die down across all the threads and on the bottom side(inside the trunk) i used a washer with the rubber built into it that came from Ace. Then i double nutted with new 10/32 nuts.
Hopefully this will keep any water out if it ever sees rain.
