68 Barracuda Formula S 340 missing trim tag and Vin / dash

-
Maybe I'm too far into the rum, but didn't 68 get production sequence numbers stamped into the body panels as opposed to partial VIN'S?
1968 Formula's are different.....motors/trans and body #'s are stamped the same.....

Yes title has wrong vin BH27P8B198220
That tells me this title was made up (2005?) after the dash VIN was missing and there was nothing in system for it nor person that took it to DMV had any past paperwork on it. Like no pink slip.

I don’t see dual exhaust cutouts in the rear valance. Would need to see pictures of underside exhaust of floor pan behind rear seat

That rear valance looks like it's been off or coming off......better back out.....

Like I said elsewhere, those are Shipping Order numbers. Since there was no VIN on the dash, or fender tag available, someone decided that the numbers on the trunk lip were the VIN numbers and had the title reflect those numbers. I had to do a class for the Illinois Secretary of State about pre 1969 numbers on cars, they had NO IDEA until I proved it to them...

But you stated Formula S are different. Why would they be different? What proof other than citing post #15? There's not solid proof this car is a Formula S. Do you own a Formula S that you're basing your answer on?

Shame this cars' VIN info is all missing.

The trunk lip stamp shows a 340 Formula S because the motor code, year, and assembly plant. Because the lip paint is original and goes to the unique convertible parts this was a convertible. A lot of explaining. And once restored paint will be gone.

Dash VIN missing and THEN the title was obviously missing too. Then in 2005 someone tried to get is registered out of thin air. Either knowingly or unknowingly used the SO numbers for the VIN incorrectly.

Seems like a parted out car or taken apart and parts and paperwork disconnected with the body. Million reasons why this can happen. Many times illogical.

Enlarging the photo of the stamping seems to indicate B8B198220 although the title shows a P8B

Whoa !! that would change everything.

Sometimes you can see that stamping better from bottom side then inverse the picture.
Correct, changes everything. That's why I'm curious where @stillrunners is getting that Formula S only stamping information.

The rear valances with cutouts were an option even on the formula s cars from what I’ve researched. The rear quarters on this car need replaced as does the rear valance. Not a big deal to me. The car will never be a numbers matching car as the whole drive train is gone already. But still a cool car to put back together for a driver.

Well you're completely wrong . Show me where in any brochure that is stated. As a matter of fact post here where you researched and it makes that claim. The dual exhaust cutouts were specific to all Formula S ( 68 &69) and all '69 cuda package cars. By all means fix up your car and drive it.

Were any of these ever built with the N97 noise reduction package? Or was that for B-Bodies?

Incorrect.

Exhaust cutouts were standard on all 68-69 Formula S models.

None of that for '68 or '69 Barracudas. What year B bodies ?
1970 for sure. A quick Google search says 1969-71, if you can believe it. The '71s had cutouts in the valance, I believe to fit the tips. My '72 Charger did. Turndowns instead of tips, no cutouts? I'm not an expert, I just knew N97 existed.

I think the same applied to 70 E body cuda's in California with any performance motor. No cut outs or chrome tips.

Agree - not sure why there's a B instead of a P - plant mistake ?
Why? Because someone was in a hurry trying to get a title based on a body stamping vs the actual VIN for the car. All Barracuda's start with a B ! Especially Formula S's... the Wife's build sheet for her '67.

That's what I understood. Required in Cali on HP cars. But, if the order sheet was coded for it, I'd imagine it could go anywhere.

No, as posted in post #62. That is not your vin. Someone used the SO or Shipping Order as a vin and added a P to make it appear as a 340.

The first letter B in a 2nd gen Barracuda vin is not Special just to Formula S cars or "especially" for
Formula S cars.

Of course it's not. It also doesn't tell you it's a 340 car! The first letter for any Barracuda is B, not P ! 5th digit is the engine code..
