68 twin turbo dart project.

I know your a busy guy with more Iron's in the fire than 10 dudes so where are the updates?? haaaa, just messin with ya! :D

There is some big things to report soon! I hope to finish my latest project and complete the intercooler fab work soon. I bought all the material and I am chomping at the bit to get to it. Your Dart has inspired me to push to finish mine. Since I will be moving out of my shop and into my 4 car garage I will loose my lift. So I decided to push my dart into my work area and finish it. Thanks for lighting a fire under my arse. Haha.

I'm kicking around a boosted application but not sure which way I want to go. Two twins, one big single or a centrifugal blower. My car is a 65 so my room is tight unless I hack into the fender wells and reinforce it. The fab work doesn't scare me just want underhood temps to not get crazy. Blower is much easier and linear but turbos are the way of the future to make stupid power. Good luck and nice work man.

So it’s been quite a few years since I’ve worked on my Dart. To be honest I’ve had no motivation, drive, or direction. So it’s sat for twenty years. I’m that guy I guess. I hate being that guy. Last year I went to drag week and took my 71 Torino, stroker Cleveland and four speed and had a BLAST! It has caused a shift in priorities. On January 20th this year my good friend Gary and I started working very seriously on the car. I have a lot to post that we have accomplished in the last two months. If you would have told me years ago that “you are 8 months from having your Dart finished “ I would’ve told you you’re crazy. I am taking this car to Dragweek 2018. Come hell or high water!! Here is a teaser.

So here is the first hurdle that really stalled my project. I put a lot of time into a custom chromoly K frame with a rack and pinion and still utilized the stock torsion bars. Instead I bought a QA1 complete drag race k member and arms. Really nice piece and the geometry is spot on. I had my reservations about buying them because of all the complaints about the original design by CAP. This front end is far from what CAP started with. You can also see the Mark Williams brake assemblies.

Here is a general photo of the car. I really don't have any pictures of the entire car. Next time I roll it out I will take some pictures. It may not see the light of day till its painted though.

Here is the plan. I plan to take it to Dragweek 2018 and race it. I have my spot all paid for and the hotels reserved. I have made a long list of items to be mocked up before I disassemble it and paint it. For paint I will be painting it myself in the garage where it is now. The car is roughed into shape already and it just needs a final blocking and I should be ready to go. The motor will be a stock 340 short block straight from the junkyard. I will top it off with W5 heads and install a solid roller cam. My plan is to make 1250 flywheel horsepower. The internet says that I can't do that. I'll let you in on a secret. I have already done that, for 100 passes, and it didn't break. Maybe Maddart can chime in lol. I am going to run a 727 built by Protrans. The rear is a Ford 9" with 3.73 gear and 40 spline axles gun drilled, lightweight spool, and aftermarket aluminum case all from Mark Williams. I don't know maybe I am crazy, maybe I am not, but we will find out.

Not to discourage you but the lower control arms you have on the car are designed to be behind the front axle pivot point. Do you have room to put the rack behind the axle centerline?

No not at all. I originally had them bolted up to do the rack conversion on the fabricated k frame. I didn’t have time to switch it all over. It now has the Stock rear steer. I ended up using a stock manual steering box. Good eye though.

Looks great! What size are the twins?

I’ll be there! It’s funny how the internet works. I talked to you at one of the check points last year and then again at a gas station but I didn’t know you were Hemi Runner here and for b bodies.
Maybe I need to tattoo my forum name on my forehead, lol. We’ll see you in Atlanta! Keep the progress pics coming.

Here are photos of the brake pedal assembly and the master cylinder. The master cylinder is a stock part for a Dakota. I had to space out the brake pedal assembly so I can reach it. The slim race seat sets me really far back and now I have tons of leg room, something I can't say for other A bodies. I used aluminum plate to space out the pedals a full inch.

Here is the column install. Its a universal column from Jegs with a quick release steering hub and chromoly shaft. The outer shaft got reinforced with thick aluminum collars at the dash mounting point and the firewall. I need to find those pics.

I remember. We chatted at a couple spots. We had a blast and finished which was one of the goals. The other was a ten second average. Car has since gone 9.50 but still isn’t legal for that ET. Check out my build thread on B-bodies, it seems we’re both building twin turbo cars!

Very cool. I have been following your build over there. I am wingcarenvy there and on DC.com. See you over there too. I have a Superbird clone myself haha. It has a 440 4 barrel auto and is a slow stocker.

Now we move on to the brake lines, yay my favorite (enter sarcasm here). It starts with a soft version of stainless 3/16 inch tube from a place called Aircraft Spruce and then I ordered all the fittings from Summit Racing. The Line Loc is from Hurst and the master cylinder and mounting plate is a stock Chrysler product that I got from Richard Ehrenberg. I have lots of pictures from the Ford 9" rear end lines and tabs.
