69 Valiant - Rookie

-
Good suggestions. Wish it was a simple fix, but sadly not. And the machine shop called, and said they can't machine the torque converter. He said he could weld a different size nose on, but I don't trust it. Think I will end up ordering a custom converter to fit the new Trans and small crank.

Just talked with Pete at Hughes Performance, and they're building me a 2000-2400 stall speed converter for $291 that will fit my trans and crank.

Yay!

nice... i dig what you are doing, not big on the yellow air cleaner but Hey, if thts the worst thing you are doing great, right?

I'm not sold on it, either. Going to be putting a super six in there soon anyway, so gotta paint up the new pie tin for that. May end up putting it black.

Well, the Valiant lives! After some trouble getting it going, it's running and moves on its own. I still need to work out adjusting the transmission linkage, because I'm not getting full range of motion when shifting. But I'm just happy to hear it alive again.

The old yellow air cleaner is still on there. Up next will be installing the HEI, scarebird disc brakes, then the super six.

Going to take a week off from working on it though. I figure I owe my family a bit of time since they've been waiting patiently while I devote a good chunk of my non-working hours to getting the engine going.

Not sure if link to video works:

Got the super six installed. After some tuning, it can actually burn out a little for the first time since I've owned it. Even with the 7 1/4 2.76 gears. Don't plan on doing it, but knowing that I can certainly feels awesome.

Here's a video of the engine and how it sounds with everything done. Up next is the disc brakes, once my wheel studs arrive.

Did the first oil change since the rebuilt engine got put in, and no metal flakes. So all is good! Also adjusted the valves a bit, they were slightly loose.

wow, your car has come a long way.nice work.always liked those post cars.you are going to have a cool driver.....:happy1:

Thanks for the positive words, guys. Found a couple pictures I haven't put up yet. HEI Ignition, scarebird disc brake setup, a pic of my #5 cylinder on the old motor (the one that had low compression), headlight relays, and a pic I snapped of a tragedy averted. Found this chewed up burnt wire in the under dash harness.

Man what a great thread! Love that you are learning as well as building it, and seemingly doing a great job of building it. FABO is definitely a wealth of knowledge fro these little cars.
Keep trucking man!

Oh..... any more pictures of that Scarebird disc setup? Did you have small bolt pattern before?
Did you end up changing to large bolt pattern with the new rotor and hub?
Thanks

Hey guys. Long time no update lol. Going to be getting back into it this spring. Going to try out body work. Which means more tools to buy.

It's been a while since I looked in. Glad to see it running and coming along.
I hope I can finally report progress on mine later this year. It's been dormant for a looong time.
Alan

Great score of a car and I have to hand it to ya, for a guy who never changed your oil your kickin *** on this, Nice work!

Disassembling the valiant. I've got the bumpers/grill/lights/fenders removed. Disconnected all the electrical in the engine bay. Just need to drain/remove the radiator, disconnect transmission linkage and exhaust... then out comes the engine.

I should be able to get the engine bay cleaned, stripped, primed and painted in time for Mopar Alley. Hoping I can make some progress on the rest of the car by then also, but I'm getting a really late start here.
