So you went from mixing compression to mixing fluids..... uuhhhhg!
 
got the motor and trans out....heads are off.....looks like something fell into cylinder no.2 ....see marks on head and piston....the other chamber is the one that was repaired....
i did not see anything jump out at me on the head gaskets...i will wipe them off and take another look on Wednesday....

These heads are not going back on that short block...they dont like each other...lol
All the cylinders looked good....

I got two sets of heads that i will pick up tomorrow in Indio...one set of ported eddy and one set of SM...one of those sets will go on this short block....
need to get the pan off and get things cleaned up and get another set of those expensive head gaskets.....lol....

And...and ....what else sucks....the god dam hydraulic ram on my engine hoist took a **** while i was pulling the engine....had to set the engine back down....go down to HF and get a new ram....and it did not quite fit my hoist..but after 10 minutes with a grinder...and a hammer....it fit just find.....

ya know, as stupid as this may sound, I kinda want you to swap the 408 engine that’s on my stand, and run it. I’m curious how it’d do in a dedicated car like yours, with an experienced racer like yourself, behind the wheel... I’m tired of my engine just sitting on the damn stand for what, 10 years now. Well, I ran it last year in the car and took it out, just had to hear it run. LOL

it is a similar build. Well not as radical as yours.

-Hughes 408 short block, Hughes stage 3 ported Eddy heads and their roller rockers, gear drive, hydraulic roller cam, 252/256 duration @ .050. .576/576 lift. Victor 340 port matched with a 750 mighty demon. 530HP 520 Ft Lbs.

People have been known to reuse Cometics....
 
Spend the morning trying to find a water leak....checked cylinder bores looking for cracks...filled the block back up with water and watched...nothing...looking at the head gaskets I see nothing....going to pull the timing chain cover off and see what is going on there....

i think it is a time for a change...going put this motor aside for now and work on it later....

I have another 360 block bored honed and squared with a Scat 4 inch crank plus scat I beam rods and SRP pistons....plus I will pull the TF heads out of the box and give them a chance.....motor will be basically the same....Hughes 264/268 cam....crane roller rockers....and Victor 340 intake that I just got back....

It was a toss up whether to use one of your heads or the TF....I gotta try the TF heads...lol
 
My RB/stage vi combo in the Mirada would fill #3 with water every so often... tore it down. Heads checked ok, block checked ok... threw it back together with new gaskets just to have the same thing happen. Funny thing was that sometimes we’d race it 3-4 times with no ill effects, then we’d unload it and it wouldn’t start. Pull the #3 plug, flush out the water, and race away. CRC block sealer seemed to help it some, but a year after I sold the car it happened again. The new owner was informed of this phenomenon and did the same #3 routine and ran the car another year before he sold it. Only happened to him once.

I’m sure you’ll have something ready for Tonya to wheel by the 18th....
 
There is no water in the combustion chambers.....

Yes...we have a complete engine on the engine stand and a spare trans.....but going to push forward with the 408 unless something holds up the show...

Got started today on the next project...mounted the pistons and rods...and they only thing i hate more then spiro locks is double locks....

All done....kinda over cast and cold for us Vegas guys...52 degrees....I need to wash block.....and get rings cut then this thing will be done fast...
 
Birth of a Mopar 408..........Got the blocked washed and cleaned....wiped down the cylinders ....air pressure to dry it since it was raining in Vegas ,,,,cleaned again with brake cleaner......sprayed wd40 to keep from rusting...

Got the Scat 4340 4 inch stroke crank in place ....Clevite narrowed fully grooved main bearing...the lucas oil engine assembly did not want to flow...lol...

Scat rods and Pistons are made by Wiseco with a MP part number on them...I will write it down tomorrow...

picture of block and crank...plus pistons hanging on rods......need to get rings filed tomorrow....and should have them in the block by Saturday....got timing chain set coming out of Summit ...hopefully here tomorrow...so I can get the cam degreed in.....have no tracking number yet on the head gaskets.....have hughes cam and howard EDM lifters,,,,,,,
this engine should come to get pretty fast....have to check to see if I have a pan gasket..... and I need some engine paint....and warm weather....

Ok..Summit tracking number says timing chain set will be here on Friday.....that should get the short block done this weekend...
 
crap.........MP pistons P5007413...CH is 1.42,,,,,instead of 1.465

compression is calculated now at 11 to 1....should be easier on head gaskets
 
Have you tried a thin smear of silicone on the heads and block around the water holes?
 
I have always put the head gaskets on with no coating or anything....will give it a try
 
It has worked for me only problem applications.

I use a thin smear.
You have to work pretty fast so it doesn’t start to skin over before you get the heads on.
I do the block and head, then quickly stick the gasket on followed by the head right afterwards.
