I have a 72 Cuda with no engine (it was a 340). Original 4 speed in place. I can buy a rebuilt 392 now at 404 cu in, and built for the street. Is a new bell housing needed? Will the small block trans stand the torque? I'm new at this, so I don't know what engines mate with what trans. The engine is fairly cheap (I think) for a well built old hemi and all ready to go in and drive, assuming I can bolt parts together.
All advice is appreciated. thanks

Will it fit yes. Still a fair amount of work. I had a 392 I was going to put in my 73 cuda. Came with the car. Sold it and bought a 5.7 less aggravation and work.

Will the 392 bolt to the 340 trans? If so, original or an adaptor bellhousing?

Yes and no,the bolt pattern is the same but you need an adaptor as the dowel pins are in different locations on the hemi vs the 340.several companies make them if you look online

I just looked up the designations for Mopar body styles. I did not know that the Cuda changed from A to E in 1970. I am therefore on the wrong site! Yikes. Sorry for the hassle. I'll post on the E bodies site. Thanks everyone.

From what I hear, you'll get more help here on FABO than FEBO!

correct, we are more knowledgeable, nice, and have a betters HP-LBS ratio than the people at FEBO
oh, and were also better looking and more modest

I use the adapter from the 354 to mate it to a 727

stuffed it into a step side truck...lol

I am building a rat rod truck right now with a 56 model 331 truck Hemi. They are some of the best built engines Mopar ever made. Although your swap is unconventional, the early Hemi is cool in anything. You caint screw up no matter what you put it in, especially an E body. That will be cool.

won`t fit at all, no way! send it to me, contact me for shipping address!! LOL:coffee2:

You will need to go with manual steering unless you go aftermarket suspension with rack & pinion. The small block mounts will work to a point. A plate can be attached to raise the brackets on the insulator.

Plan to fabricate everything. My dad put a 392 in a 67 Coronet and there is nothing off the shelf. So you'll be fabing mounts, headers, etc. My opinion, pass and get something that was designed to fit. Old hemi's are heavy and expensive, leave them for the street rod crowd.

If your new to this then this isn't the swap for you.

I've got a rebuild 392 sitting on the stand and was planning on installing it in a 67 Charger, but sold the car before doing the install.

I have a Clark Cortez transaxle that will accept pretty much any engine if you have an industrial adapter..... It would make a great mid engine Hemi project....
