I need help! I am chasing leaks in my 727 and it is driving me to drink! I thought the pan was leaking so I replaced it and thought I had it solved. It is still leaking and not from the pan. Th leak is on the tail of the tranny behind the pan and is running down the pan. I think that it might be the speedo cable or the housing it goes in. Is there any other places back there that I should have a look at? I am about to blow a gasket and start leaking like the dam tranny in my car!!!!!!

has it been sitting for a long time? maybe all winter?

when they sit for a long time the torque convertor drains back into the case and if it sits long enough the case will over fill and drain through the vent......different convertors drain back at different rates.

as soon as you start it the fluid rushes back into the convertor to start the cycle all over again

i would check around the vent

I run it a quart low to insure that this does not happen. I have a deep pan and only run it at the add mark.

other than the seal between the main case and tail shaft or the speedo gear housing there are not many places for it to leak ......i see your frustration

I am going to get new seals for the speedo housing an see if that stops the leak.

I never could get a 727 to stop leaking , and i had a shi& load of these , always from the pan , every car i had same thing .Leaks when it starts to cool down , dry it off go for a drive about 1 hour , come home dry as a new one, come out next morning pan all wet and leak marks on ground .Right now on my Dart i have a regular deep pan , with a drain using a new reusable gasket from Mopar and black weatherstrip adhesive , and you know it is not to bad now , you name it i tried it. But mine is definitely every car i had from the pan only .

I have a new pan with the mac daddy gasket from Mopar and so far that part is working!

yoke seal
tailshaft to case seal
speedometer housing seal
transmission lines
dipstick tube O ring
vent
gear selector seal
input shaft front seal
band adjuster
pan seal/gasket
NSS
a few of these will find their way to the pan and drip from there

Not on any 727 i ever had , mine is directly from the pan , the rest of my transmission is clean , like i say it never leaks when it is warm , as soon as it starts to cool down ,

Rear bearing release ring cover with the two phillips screws. :)

I'd rather be doing what you are doing.:D
I am replacing all my bushings, ball joints, shocks and brakes in the front in between appointments that I have to drive to.

(Take it apart, put it all back together, take it apart and on and on till everything is replaced)

I don't want to loose the work. :wack:

That must SUCK big time!

On the 727 I'm working on (my first) right now, I ran a large flat file across the the tail housing face & it was way out. Made sense as there was alot of crud built up behind the pan. May want to check it while it's off.

It makes a 4 speed look better and better all the time!

if it has oil in it then its the same no matter what ....i have a leaky 833 ......keeps leaking out of the o ring on the reverse lever arm and now its leaking out of the front bearing retainer .....so if it is mechanical and has oil its the same deal LOL :fucyc:

O ring on low/reverse lever shaft, goes in from rear, tailshaft holds it in..
X2 if you are working with the tailshaft, this is a good time to change this O ring. When they leak, it runs down between the tailshaft housing and the main trans case to the pan rail making it look like it's the pan leaking at the back.

Get you a bottle of oil dye and a black light. Some people use red lens glasses but I do it when it is dark so I have never needed them. You will find the leak. I have never not been able to find a leak with it. This is one brand but there are others. Our Oreilly's carries it.

Had same problem on mine, even after a complete rebuild and all new gaskets. I finally tried the Lucas Oil trans sealer and now it doesn't leak any more.

1968 dart,

Out of curiosity, did you switch to a synthetic oil ?

My trans out of my MG was great until I switched oils and it leked like a sieve..went back to my old oil and all was good.

Just a thought.

Ian.

PS - are you looking for a 4 speed set up ? PM me..

What "inertia" said is my guess. The tranny in my old van leaked for YEARS before I discovered that. I would almost bet on it being that
