I recently acquired a nice old Dart race car. A real nice N/SS. It is basically all together, I drove it onto the trailer. My question is about the trans. Is it a manual valve body or a auto, is there a way to tell from the out side? The guy that put the car together doesn't really know. And I know from past experience if that kick down isn't there and needs to be the trans will go south fast. Any help please.

If it moves under it's own power, just put it in D and see if it shifts, it will short shift without the TPL if it is indeed auto. If it does, then you need the TPL.

You are correct though, if it is auto then you will want the throttle pressure linkage, or damage will occur.

It won't hurt it to do as I described above though.

Some (but not all) manual valve bodies have the stem where the throttle pressure (kickdown) linkage attaches cut off flush so there's no way to hook it up. If it has the stem you'll have to test it like Bruce said to be sure
